I unexpectedly got to complete one of my collection goals that I expected to finish closer to the end of the year. I’m still reveling in the accomplishment and feel content enough to slow down now for a good while.
When on purchasing breaks how engaged to the hobby do you stay? Do y’all still follow the market and consume Pokemon content?
E4 has really deepened my appreciation for the hobby, so I will follow everyone’s shenanigans over here still. At the very least I’ll periodically check everyone’s collection updates and watch the videos on Patreon.
Bonus Question! What are some collection threads that really strike you and think everyone should check out?

What is a “purchasing break”? Seriously though, i keep an eye out but sometimes it may become too tempting to keep buying.

I don’t really monitor the market on things I’ve already purchased. If I go on a break, I am still heavily active in e4 (mainly in the discord) because I have made wonderful friends over the years. It turns out, your entire life and your relationships don’t have to revolve around Pokemon.

When I take a break, I tend not to look at any items or new releases, because I feel too pressured to buy. I used to be constantly checking because I was worried that certain things I want would never come up for sale again. After almost 10 years of observation I know that for my specific goals, sales are cyclical and not buying right away doesn’t mean I’m missing out forever! I’m actually surprised how often I’ve seen certain things re-enter the market. Once I do buy them though, they never see the light of day again lol

This is my fear for my break. I’ve been working on really focusing down on what I can realistically collect that still tickles my little monkey brain.
I still do look to interact with E4, in some cases look to interact even more, so it looks like I’ll just have to test my willpower.

The recent pressure to buy is a major factor in my buying decisions as of late.
I paid solidly over market for some cards that don’t show up too often to complete my aforementioned collection goal.
Of course the over market sale is probably gonna lead to more copies hitting the market, and someone is sure get some of those cards for far better prices than I paid. C’est la vie.
Hopefully this break gives me some peace of mind from 2026’s market craziness and a chance to start pre-emptively saving for any market corrections that may or may not happen.

Write down what your goals were/are. Write down why. Use it to remind yourself to not infinitely expand your goals to anything shiny.
I’m jealous. I will be doing this as soon as I complete my main collection goal (3 cards away), as unfortunately, the vintage market side of this hobby is just plain stressful and unfun for me nowadays. My plan is to check back in in mid 2027 and see if the nonsense train is still rolling.
Unfortunately for me, the goal posts on this goal keep moving to such a degree that I’m currently deeper in the hobby than ever to try and afford it - directly grading enmasse, and then vending some shows for the first time later in the year when my subs get back.
As to what I will do while I’m taking a break, I will just continue to attend pre-release tournaments for each set release, maybe get back into playing standard format again, and maybe pick up cheap Japanese IR that I like as they release. That will be a much less stressful way for me to enjoy Pokémon cards.

Yes! I’m grateful that my modern goals were still within reach even in this market. I noticed about a month ago that the market was stressing me out too and decided to just be done with it, even if it meant an overpay.
Unfortunately my vintage goals are out of reach right now, so those will have to wait until something changes. Whether those changes are the market or collecting in lower grades/raw. For now though I will enjoy not stressing over prices or “missed opportunities”.
