So here’s my first journal entry/update; I recently traded a handful of flip coins, both recently released and vintage/rare ones, to a friend in Japan and in return they sent me a set of coins that I’ve been hunting for quite some time.
Originally, I was only interested in the Pikachu coin as it was the last one that I needed in order to finish a collection goal of mine but it ended up being much easier to search for the whole set rather than just the one that I was interested in the most.
I attempted to purchase a complete set from Tokopedia via Indo4ward proxy but that ended up falling through since the seller never shipped the order.
Shortly afterwards though, things began to look up - a friend of mine from Japan reached out informing that they had found a set of the coins for me and that they were working to acquire it… fast forward a few months to now and we’ve successfully traded with each other through the post.
Here is a closeup photo of the set once I put them into coin flips:
While none of these coin designs are new, the color and holographic foil pattern combos are all unique.
In the West, the Charmander and Bulbasaur designs first appeared in the FireRed & LeafGreen theme decks, the Pikachu design in the EX Trainer Kit (Latias & Latios), and the Mew design in the EX Legend Maker theme decks; The Squirtle design has never been released outside of South East Asia.
I’m really happy to finally have this set of coins, especially the Pikachu. I still have a few flip coin collection goals but this was one that I was actively seeking out.
These five coins featuring Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Pikachu, and Mew were released released to promote the First Impact set release in Indonesia back in 2019 and the Infinite Power set release in Taiwan back in 2020. They were also recently re-released in Taiwan to help promote the Mega Brave and Mega Symphonia set releases in August 2025.
More info
I don’t know how these coins were distributed in Indonesia beyond that they were given out to promote the First Impact set release.
In Taiwan, these coins were originally distributed in blind bags as a gift-with-purchase when buying two booster packs or when spending 360 CNY on TCG items at 7-11 and FamilyMart.
PokemonCoinFan has photos of the front and back of the Taiwanese blind bag here and here.
The comments section on this official Facebook post from Pokemon Taiwan has more photos of the coins and blind bags. Funnily, people learned that you can figure out what coin is inside by using a paper and pencil to trace the design through the plastic.
These coins were later re-released in Taiwan in 2025 to promote the Mega Brave and Mega Symphonia set releases. PokemonCoinFan has documented some of the details of this in their 11th meeting report from September 2, 2025.
