Quit collecting Pokémon?

I was almost at a stopping point, having my collection goal 100% complete except for cards over $5k.

Then I added a new collection goal to keep the passion going

yes… probably, one day…

i only have so much mental capacity. i’ve been making music for the last couple of years and hopefully, as time goes on, i get better at it and have less time for focusing on sets coming out (which is where i get the majority of my enjoyment through collecting).

now, will i sell off everything i own… idk probably not.

the majority of my collection is bulk (pokedex collection), so it would be more of a hassle trying to liquidate it than just holding onto it.

I doubt I’ll ever quit collecting completely, but I have downsized and consolidated my collection many times. One thing I will surely walk away from in time is interacting with the Pokemon community online. After living through 2021, when we see an inkling of a new boom I’ll probably delete my socials to stay sane for awhile.

While i didnt stop im for sure not buying as much as i did in the early days, mostly because my collection is missing just a few cards that are, nowadays, way too expensive in PSA10 1st Ed. I got 9s as place holders for now.

I’ve been thinking about adding new goals like Alternate Art modern cards or jumping back into Ex Era; but since i got a kid coming in a month, i’d rather wait before i decide what to do.

To be completely honest i dont see myself leaving the hobby in the foreseeable future, this hobby gave me so much, gave me motivation to keep going, friends, some epic moments, it gave me a lot…

I do get discouraged from time to time and go through the “whatever im done” but i think thats a me problem. Tend to get in my head from time to time but thats the way it goes.

Not having anyone to pass my collection down to is one of the reasons I’d consider having children eventually.

But that’s a problem for future DDK. I’m enjoying the time I do have with my favourite cards right now.

Love reading everyone’s responses. Keep them coming! :fire::lizard:

I don’t see myself ever stopping. This hobby is an escape for me. I absolutely love my job but I work weird hours and it can be stressful at times. Pokémon takes me back to 1999 :slightly_smiling_face:

As a teenager, I’m kinda at a crossroads here. I’m gonna be growing up, which could mean that I would need to leave stuff behind. On the other hand, it was a good part of my childhood, and I still think that I should collect it.

Quitting seems like such a permanent term to me, so I hesitate to say I’d ever quit, but definitely expect periods, maybe very long ones, where I’m inactive.

It’s also part of my long term plan to consolidate my collection exclusively into things I really enjoy. Thinking that’ll be a row box of slabs, a binder, and likely some miscellaneous binders for things like clear files and postcards.

Collecting as a whole is something I’ve enjoyed ever since I was a kid though, and don’t think that mindset will ever go away.

I have no plans to stop buying Pokemon since it’s one of the funniest hobbies I can think of, staying away from it for ~10 years was a massive blunder.

Naturally my main interests are from gen 1-3 but lately I’ve enjoyed certain Scarlet & Violet sets, the current release pace of products can be intimidating yet I feel no shame while I skip some of latest stuff, that just means I can stockpile more money for better use.

I can’t stop being a collector. Seriously I don’t know how to shut it off!

I dont think I’ll ever truly quit. I do stop for longer periods of time depending on how i feel. I usually will stop for a few months to a year, then start organizing randomly, and there i am, back at it. Selling the collection off, probably wont happen.

Will never quit or sell my entire collection until i am gone from this planet :stuck_out_tongue:

I do think I will have periods of more interest/less interest but happy to keep the majority of what I have today for good.

Do I think it will happen?

No.

Can I conceptualize how it might happen?

Yeah, definitely.

A lot of my ability to keep collecting is based in the market fundamentals of Pokemon. If some specific elements of Pokemon’s strategy changed and undermined that, I would probably stop collecting. Both because of the financial implications and because I invest in the game because I trust them to manage it in the way they have signaled they intend to do so.

Pokemon would have to undermine my faith in it. To say I am far from that is an understatement. I’m more confident in the company than I have ever been.

So I don’t currently predict any event where I stop collecting. How I collect changes all the time. The amount of money I’m putting into it vs other things changes all the time. I might sell things or buy things on any given day. But the act of collecting Pokemon cards is embedded deep into my life at this point. It is a habit, a motivation, a dream, a hope, a hobby, a community, a career, and more.

I get the feeling of the waves of collecting. The ups and downs, desire to cashout.

Maybe one day I’ll downsize, likely for financial reasons. But I doubt I’ll ever truly stop owning at least some cards. I could never quit

My interest comes and goes. I’m predisposed to being a collector, and I’ve enjoyed Pokemon for over 20 years in various forms, so I don’t see myself completely losing the bug.

As others have stated, collecting Pokémon ebbs and flows for me. Much like my other hobbies. Collecting GBA games/Game Boy memorabilia is another one of my hobbies. I haven’t bought a Pokémon card or Game Boy item in months. That being said, I enjoy casually keeping up with all collectible news. Revisiting my hobbies helps me to appreciate them, and taking breaks helps to keep me reset. I definitely believe there will be a time when I sell a lot off/downsize, likely to fund something else, etc. Passing a few special items of my collections down would be nice too. :ok_hand::100:

I have a couple of collections and I usually focus on one the most. Currently I am mainly buying stuff for my Game Boy collection and less Pokémon cards. However, in a couple of weeks I will be back in Japan and I will for sure buy cards there.

However I don’t intend to stop collecting completely.

I quit collecting from 2002-2019 so I’ll never say never but I doubt I’ll ever quit again at this point.

I do however expect my collection to get smaller over time and consolidated into a handful high value cards and a couple binders worth of memories in my latest years of life.
