That’s a reasonable number. I don’t think any person of sound mind would disagree.

But, have you ever considered… 43?

No. 43 would be factually wrong.

I opened 42 packs of Prismatic, got nothing. So no more than 3 is the answer

10, 18, 36 or 72.

36 is more enjoyable (english booster box)

at least you know you should get a good hit at some point in the box, gives you something to look forward too more.

I’ve not opened any in years though, my last box opening was a Ultra Prism I got for Valentines Day 2019

0, pack opening gets addicting and you start to forget that each pack is $4+ I’ve seen grown adults who are supposed to know how to handle money blow hundreds on pack openings in one sitting and not bat an eye, it’s like playing slots but you aren’t receiving money in return you’re receiving pieces of children’s cardboard, in some ways it’s worse than traditional gambling because at the end of the day it’s just pieces of cardstock with fancy pictures on them

And that’s at MSRP. Right now, the cheapest you can get BW packs at a local card shop near me is $10. That’s a lot of money to spend to have a lousy 1-in-6 chance of pulling an Illustration Rare in a set with about 150 of them.

None - buy the cards that you want in the condition that you require and save money.

If you are looking to gamble, no more than 2 booster boxes or 5 ETBs of one set in one sitting.

Honestly yeah I buy singles 100% of the time unless I want a box collection for the goodies (sleeves, pin, idk) or a booster box for a holiday. Even then I never get English and always JP/CHN/KOR. Just way more value there

When I was a child I always wanted to rip as many packs as possible. As a grown child now, I will rip occasionally and ripping an entire box is one of the coolest things ever. My goal isn’t ever to make money on the contents, more the experience of something I dreamed of as a kid. I will normally open with my cousins or brother as well so it makes the experience more enjoyable when you have someone to share the memories and cards with as well.

Ripping Japanese booster boxes is the only way to go for ripping imo, because while it is still gambling you’re gonna get 3 to 4 ar and 1 SR minimum. Generally, and especially in English, as has been said above get them singles

6 I guess. Maximum 9 (judging by those days when i used to buy 2-3 “3-pack blisters” of Lost Origin when i was hunting for Giratina)

If I open more I start thinking I’m doing something wrong. Usually I open 4 packs and that happens in some bar because i buy packs at magazine kiosks.

I still think that 3-pack blisters is the best way to open boosters. I for the love of Arceus can’t get why ETBs are popular/expensive. It’s one of the worst pokemon card products ever (worse than tins because those at least don’t come with other items and tin boxes are wide enough for storing some other geeky merch). Take lots of space and gives you lots of unwanted junk + it’s not as randomized as 3-pack blisters. If you do gambling at least do it with a bit of thought behind.

If you’re attempting to complete the set, I say until you have the majority of commons/uncommons/rares. For a master set, double the pack openings.

If you want a particular card from the set, buy it; you’ll spend more money in the long run opening packs/boxes attempting to pull it yourself.

depends if you open once a year or once a day

What would be appropriate in either case?

depends on your annual income and expenses
