QotD: Are there too many Pokemon?

I care slightly less about the number of Pokemon (although it is growing to be quite a bit) and more so about the composition of each Pokemon. I prefer the Pokemon that are based on animals or ideas that exist in the real natural world (birds, frogs, foxes, turtles, electricity, etc.) and things that are close off-shoots of that (dragons, mythical/legendaries, fairies, ghosts, etc.). The species that I think are completely idiotic are inanimate objects that all of that sudden are now a Pokemon (Klefki, Chandelure, etc.).

Naturally, as the list of Pokemon increases, the harder it is to continually come up with solid species. Although…you do need some bad species to make it apparent that others are quite good :face_with_spiral_eyes:

IMO the quality of the mon’s past Gen IV plummeted – there are still some really cute/unique modern Pokemon, but IMO the overwhelming majority of them don’t hold a flame to the original first few generations.

the sky is the limit. So long as the pokemon is interesting, I’m all for it. Gen 5 was, I think, where they tried something that didn’t pan out. But it was really just a homage to gen 1 by making gen 1/2 facsimiles from the ground up. It didn’t land with fans. It was too many new pokemon in a single generation, but the idea was to use only new pokemon in the wild. Which at the time WAS fun and refreshing. Though they forgot that the fire type exists for some reason. And so the meme of ā€œthey ran out of ideasā€ came about from it too. Just a shame a really.

I think scarlet and violet has some of the best and worst designs in the series to date at the same time. So while they didn’t introduce as many as in gen 5, I do think the gen 5 pokemon have strong designs. And yes, even my arch nemesis, garbodor, is a solid design, we just have a long standing feud. Trubbish is better obviously.

But not every pokemon is going to be a hit, and thats okay. We now have a ton of pokemon that are great. They can slow down. And I am a fan of some of the regional forms too. It was a good concept that I think they are dropping the ball on a little. Totally got overshadowed by generational gimmick mechanics that detract from letting them hit the limelight. You can’t tell me that alolan sandshrew and sandslash aren’t absolutely brilliant designs. And Galarian Ponyta and Rapidash were exactly what I’d want for a unicorn pokemon.

I also am in the minority, but I do like many gen 4 pokemon additions. though this may be nostalgia talking I admit. I really do like the evolutions they made for the gen 1/2 pokemon. Mismagius, yanmega, magmortar and electrivire are, I think, pretty spiffy.

Too many PokƩmon? Nope.

Too many humanoid PokƩmon? Yes.

Too many PokƩmon with names I cannot pronounce (any more)? Totally!

There are certified bangers and absolute dumpster fires in every generation.

I always look forward to discovering, catching, and battling with new Pokemon.

I don’t think there are too many Pokemon. If it’s a whole world then I would expect there to be a lot. I think it could be interesting to maybe have newly discovered pokemon in the same region. It’s like the idea of ancient and future, just not so much on the nose about it. Like imagine a prehistoric Charizard or a pokemon that was so small you could only see it with a microscope…but it’s a Kanto Pokemon.

Also imagine the idea of evolution within evolution. Although as I’m working through it in my head Charmander’s prehistoric form would just be him without a flame on his tail…which is just a salamander  I feel like I’m on to something though.

If the point is to find all the pokemon in all the regions, then it would make sense that more pokemon are discovered within that region. Or imagine if they had a world that was Kanto but Pokemon migrated and evolved differently. Like imagine Eevee in Kanto, but it no longer made sense for it to evolve into Flareon for some reason, but became a new evolution entirely. Or what if it had to evolve on its own without the use of a stone? I’m thinking similarly to how in Digimon Veemon can digivolve into Exveemon or Flamedramon.

I think they have plenty of world to work with, and I think that they have a lot of potential to have some pretty incredible lore as well.

No I mean more like if Eevee had a normal type evolution haha like with levels, not friendship or happiness or whatever.

But how cool would it be if they made like a Red 2/Blue 2 and it was Kanto but waaaayyy into the future and the pokemon have migrated and changed? I think it would be really cool.

I also tossed around the idea of like a Planet of the Apes type of situation where the pokemon eventually talk and come together and take over the humans. Then Pokemon would be about political cunning and sabotage and instead of battling you walk around as a Noir Blastoise just looking for answers.

I like it so far. Ask me again in another 5-10 gens and I might change my mind.
