PSA 10s from Vintage theme decks?

Hi all,

I’m on a hunt to find a PSA 10 Base Set 2 holo Wigglytuff card. This is the rarest and hardest to obtain PSA 10 from the entire set from what I can tell. I have a PSA 9 now. My question is, is it even worth trying to crack open old theme decks at this point? This card comes in the “Psych Out” theme deck which I can realistically purchase on a few different sites.

It just seems like a gamble since I’ve seen these theme deck holo’s have stain/residue issues from the plastic seal and then other ones are totally fine. Has anyone here had any luck opening theme decks and actually getting Gem Mint condition holo’s?

Let’s just say it would take you less time and money to straight up find and buy a PSA 10 copy instead of trying to grade one from theme decks you purchase.

Honestly, try buying raw copies off of ebay and grading them. As ash mentioned above, yes, it will take longer, but you may get what you’re looking for - not worth cracking the decks in my opinion, they will only rise in value over time while sealed.

I managed to grade a gem 10 kangaskhan from the jungle theme deck a while back. It’s definitely worth the gamble I reckon

Buy mint raw ones/ones from other grading companies to grade with PSA, or just wait for the PSA backlog to return. Seems like a hard card to grade but cracking sealed product isn’t worth it. There could have been a bad print run or it could be off center even if it was mint.

I’m so glad I didn’t crack my base set theme case to grade the cards

I want to believe this, but in this case with a population of only 8, I think it will be incredibly difficult to find. I’m guessing anyone who has this card is using it to complete the set. So the odds of finding one for sale anytime soon I think are going to be very low. I’ve managed to find almost every card in PSA 10 at some point except the Wigglytuff. That’s why I’m thinking the theme deck might be one of my only ways to ever get it in a high grade condition at this point.

This gives me some hope/assurance at least that it’s even possible. I’ll definitely consider buying some potentially, I’m just trying to determine the odds of actually pulling a possible 10 card.

Regarding raw copies, I went through every single one on eBay for an hour and I couldn’t find any that I think would be Gem Mint. Even a really clean one I found that had a showcase video has the stupid print lines. I’m telling you guys, this is a HARD one to get!

Think I opened 5 or so jungle theme deck cases trying to get 10s when they were very cheap, didn’t have any luck. Wouldn’t attempt at the prices today.

There was a PSA 10 BS2 Wigglytuff for sale on IG a couple of weeks back. I can’t remember who was selling it, but perhaps take a look through there. I’ll also try to track it down for you.

I saw TCA open a few jungle theme decks a while back and all of them had some small issues such as factory lines. I think cracking theme decks might work, but it will not be as easy as you think. Certainly a long shot I reckon.

i have opened a couple dozen theme decks (all base set, mind you) and only ever had one get a 10. it always ranged from 8-9 with a couple 7 outliers

I can chime in on this, I specifically opened a couple of Base Set 2 theme decks (Lightning Bug x2) around a year ago. Terrible glue residue on both holos, both would get PSA 5 max.

Not worth the gamble in my eyes!
