PSA 10 vs BGS 10 (GOLD)

It should be pointed out that, while it’s certainly much harder to get a BGS 10 than a PSA 10 on a WOTC holo, your odds are still far worse if you’re trying to cross grade with the cards still in the case. For a legit shot you’d need to crack the cards out of the PSA cases, but with the cost of grading for this card and the chance that after cracking them they wouldn’t re-grade as PSA 10s, good luck convincing people to do that.

Sent a psa 10 for a cross (graded review) at bgs with a minimum grade of 10 (meaning they send it back if didn’t cross to a 10). They review it in case. It did not cross to a gold label sadly due to one hairline scratch (that I never saw even looking closely until they pointed it out) and one extremely tiny dot of whitening. Bgs sends a page showing where the defects are. It is very expensive to do the graded review as they charge $25 for the review…then full grading cost if it does cross, plus shipping plus insurance. Mine was a a relatively expensive card so I went for 5 day grading and it ended up being $67 or something like that to basically have my card sent back to me.

So you would have preferred a gold label 10 over a PSA 10?

Yes, I think a BGS grade can only be as high as its highest subgrade.

But my point was that the value of either should be determined by the actual card (not by the number placed on it, although it’s highly probative)

Ya I would say that makes sense. Hence we have the “strong” or “weak” 10s. But in the general sense of the overall market, and the people likely to buy your card in the future over on eBay, the value is determined by the overall grade.

In my opinion, these are the grades for certain eras of cards which deserves a premium (Black Label will always deserve the highest premium no matter for which era).

  1. English (pre-modern) - BGS 10 Gold > PSA 10

  2. English (modern) - BGS 10 Gold=PSA 10

  3. Japanese (old back) - BGS 10 Gold > PSA 10

  4. Japanese (new back) - BGS 10 Gold=PSA 10

I’ve tried to cross PSA 10s to bgs 10s about 3 dozen times. And I mean beautiful expensive ones. 0 crossed over:( They were all base set types. I’m done trying.

BGS Black Label> BGS Gold Label 10> PSA 10> BGS 9.5

Oof. That’s a big F. Sad to hear. If you ever try again, good luck with that attempt and I hope a few cross over

Yeah that’s what I’m starting to conclude now

In general

BGS 10 > PSA 10 > BGS 9.5 > PSA 9 > BGS 9 > PSA 8 > PSA 7 = BGS 8.5

And I wouldn’t touch anything below BGS 8.5 with a 10-foot pole. I’ve seen too many BGS 8s that would be like PSA 4s.

That’s what I’m concluding now as BGS 10 gold > PSA 10

Yeah, no one was questioning this man. You’re just learning about it now.

But as @chok said, this only matters for vintage stuff. For modern stuff people treat PSA 10s and BGS 10s the same.

Just keep in mind all of this is generalized. There are certainly some PSA 10s that are stronger than some BGS 10s. There are certainly many PSA 9s that are stronger than many BGS 9.5s, etc. (this one is super common). There are certainly some BGS 9.5s that are stronger than some PSA 10s (varies with the sub-grades on the BGS card). Etc. etc. So, pay attention to the sub-grades on the BGS card, but even more importantly use the grades as a guideline and use your eyes to make your own determination about cards.

That makes a lot of sense. Thanks

Let’s put it this way if a BGS BL was a person it would be this.
{spoiler}[/spoiler]
}
So imagine with card control for it to automatically be in descending order if this doesn’t match, according to the executives running the show.

[EDIT] Tried to use the spoiler for the last 15 minutes. If anyone could be nice to help me out on the coding for spoilers for when using images I would be grateful to hell.

I will always pay a big premium for a gold label BGS 10 over PSA 10. If you have done a lot of grading with both companies you know how difficult it is to hit a gold label from BGS. When I send cards to PSA I expect most of my cards to get 10’s when I send to BGS I hope to hit 9.5 quads. It is just a different scale since BGS has set their gem mint to 9.5 and 10’s are Pristine which PSA does not offer.

That’s a great insight. I always knew the black label is hard but imagined the gold label wouldn’t be that much of a stretch. It’s very niche and I usually end up seeing 9.5s or PSA 10s. So totally get your point. Hence I was in this unique position of seeing a Gold 10 priced similar to a PSA 10. Glad I made the right decision of going with the gold 10 after some wonderful insights from all the e4 members
