"Prerelease kits will now be sold at retailers like Gamestop!

We’ve received word that certain retailers will begin selling a “Forbidden Light Build & Battle Kit” on May 4th, the same day Forbidden Light hits store shelves. Each kit will retail for $19.99."

How do you all think this will effect prerelease numbers and value of the promo cards? Thoughts?

Strange move by Pokemon in my opinion. Reducing the exclusivity of these promos will be detrimental to hobby stores, although i have been seeing a down tick in attendance since guardians rising. This certainly wont help.

WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY!!!

As if every single TCG product weren’t worthless enough already, we gotta keep this train going folks!

Do game stores usually get those pre-release kits for free? I’m wondering how they slapped that $19.99 tag. Wondering if they observed secondary markets and took note of how valuable those pre-release kits were.

Does this mean that staff promos are no longer a thing?

They have 4 booster packs in them and at $4 a pack it really isn’t unreasonable considering what else you get inside.

Oh tru

PokeBeach mentions that these pre-release kits being sold individually may be the reason for this product as well:

A “Basic Energy Box” containing “450 basic Energy cards, presumably 45 of each type. It will also include a PTCGO code card. It will retail for $19.99 and be available at retailers like Gamestop and Walfart.”

I don’t think it’s confirmation of the same promos though. Im looking forward to these boxes. Makes drafting a whole lot easier

$19.99 retail isn’t bad as ecruteak pointed out. The problem is that any exclusivity and excitement of something that is “Prerelease” is now up in smoke. It’s now just the same as a normal release with a different type of promo card and a cool word on the packaging to make people who don’t know any better feel special.

I’m wondering if this is a thing now because there will no longer be any Toys R Us release events? I realize that these were generally done the weekend of release and not “pre-release”, could it just be a coincidence? We’ve had these Toys R Us release event promos for around 2 years now if I remember right. Forbidden Light will be the first set since 2016 without Toys R Us around.

This is one of the strangest products ever made. Who needs 45 energy cards from each type? Not even a player. Also if the TCGO code unlocks all those energy cards it’s completely useless as well because you have endless amount of energy available to use in the game by default ._. I don’t think this product is necessary as you can get energy cards from a) Elite Trainer Boxes b) Theme Decks c) You get a guaranteed energy card from each Sun & Moon series pack. I don’t think this product is worth it as I think for a new player buying 2 Elite Trainer Boxes will serve well with the Energy supply and also with markers and sleeves.

Prerelease kits being sold at stores is a strange move as well…

And people ask me why I only collect Japanese Pokemon cards. It’s things like this that diminish the exclusivity of English releases.

Prerelease card are probably the last more or less interesting english promo cards. Time to go full japanese i guess

Hahaha

And now all the people trying to sell prerelease kits, immediately after release, for higher than MSRP are going to get burned.

Classic.

But what if prerelease cards start saying prerelease again. These promos in the boxes are going to have to be different.
:’) in the ideal world this is what will happen (’:
