Prerelease Clefable

Does anyone know how exactly the prerelease clefables were distributed? Were they given out raw? Or in a plastic wrap?

The card is by far my favorite promo. I’m just curious as to why 99% of them are NM-EX.

Unfortunately, I have no idea how they were distributed. But I’ve seen talked about the reason why they are all in the condition range you stated is that the blades are speculated to have been in bad shape at the time of cutting.

I hope you get your full answer dude!

Back in the day, year 2000, I seem to remember they were giving out at certain league games around the country (Canada and USA) just before the Jungle release date. The Gym Leaders or WOTC store owners that had Pokemon games played in house were giving about 20 of the pre-release Clefable to hand out to winners as prizes or to kids that seemed really excited about the game.

The cards were given out by hand and often the cards would trade hands several times before being put in a binder. We didn’t think much of grading cards back then. Also the card has lots of white front paint (ink) that was easy to scratch. The cards were lesser quality and not cut very well. So lots of silvering on the edges.

It was actually fuzzy corners on the back, not silvering in the front.

Funny story, I had two and I kept what I assumed was the better condition one and gave the other to my friend. Turns out I got a PSA 7 and he got the PSA 8. The difference? I had a sharper back, but there was a factory line I didn’t pay attention to on the front. Ooof…

Yea the corner are always fuzzy on them… A PSA 9 auctioned a few months back for around 1600. I tried to snipe it and just fell short. That’s a 2000+ card all day.
