Let us settle it

I have never heard of starlight

People who call it starlight also think a thick stamp means big #1 and also think the earth is flat

Big “gapless” energy here

I’ve seen both used and it doesn’t bother me at all. However, if you say “cosmo” and not “cosmos,” you will go straight to hell.

I think Pokemon coin collectors might call the pattern “starlight.” Or, at least, our esteemed coin collector @stagecoach does.

I’ve heard of “star foil” but never “starlight”. Now I’m questioning the difference between galaxy and cosmos foils.

Starlight is used by Bulbapedia, and for some card descriptions on Pokumon.com.

Pokumon description of Cosmos Fossil cards.

Cosmos holofoil version of the card. Normal Fossil set foils have the usual “Starlight” holofoil used up until Base Set 2. Several Cosmos holofoil Fossil cards have been found, all from Wizards of the Coast’s home state in Washington, USA. They are suspected to have been from former employees or the factory itself.

In my opinion, starlight is a reasonable description because the holofoil pattern does contain “stars” that appear to shine light. Just as cosmos is a reasonable description for the holofoil pattern starting with Base 2 (or Base with Japanese) because the orbs are planets/suns and the swirls are spiral galaxies.

Galaxies do not really look like the starlight pattern, so to me, it’s a bit of a misnomer. If anything, galaxy could be a better description of the cosmos holofoil pattern because it undeniably includes spiral galaxies (i.e., “swirls”).

I have always called it “starlight”, which is the name used on Bulbapedia and was always the de facto term other collectors I knew called it. I never realized the prevalence of Galaxy until this thread, and also thought people saying “Galaxy” were referring to Cosmos. It never occurred to me they meant Starlight.

We have seen photos of intact rolls of foil with the manufacturer’s name on them, which as I recall refers to the foil as “Starlight” — but I’m having some trouble finding the picture. I’m sure someone else remembers what I’m talking about and can find it more quickly than me.

But as the sort of collector who did his research alone and didn’t join the social aspect of the community until I was 20 years deep, it has always been Starlight to me.

It’s never too late to change

Yeah, I’ve always thought we have it backwards. Galaxy makes way more sense for cosmos pattern and vice versa.

I definitely agree with this explanation, I admit that It makes much more sense.

However I can’t stop calling it “Galaxy”, it’s unfortunately hardwired right now lol

Keep repeating that to yourself and maybe you will. :nail_care:
