Groudon and Kyogre being super overshadowed by Rayquaza.
At this point there are so many dragon legends designed to be or at least attempting to be cool, it doesn’t make sense why those that aren’t and have standout designs aren’t as popular.
Metagross is another and the last pseudo that isn’t dragon. In fact, there are only 2 with Tyranitar which is a shame.
Nidoking and Nidoqueen are awesome designs but I think neither has received a double prize card.
Wiglett and Wugtrio as the garden eel version of Diglett and Dugtrio is a perfect concept. Surprised they didn’t go more viral but I guess they suck in the game unfortunately.
Dragonite. Don’t get me wrong, it’s obviously a popular pokemon, but it’s not like Eeveelutions or Charizard which can increase demand for a set. In a world without Charizard I think it would be Top 5 most popular.
I like dratini and dragonair a lot but dragonite never really sat right with me. Too cutesy for a pseudo and 1st real dragon and too different from its evolutions, compared to a lot of other dragons I wouldnt put dragonite in the top 10
I think part of the problem is that there were just too many Water-type Pokemon in Gen 1 (a grand total of 32; comparatively speaking, there were only 12 Fire types), so some of the more plain designs like Dewgong, Seaking and Kingler were just kind of forgotten about (plus, Dewgong unfortunately paled in comparison in combat to other Water types like Slowbro, Starmie, Lapras and Cloyster).
I do love Dewgong, though. Seel was one of my first favorite Pokemon when the games first came out. Was always upset about the fact that you couldn’t get one until very late in the game, and by then, it’s just too late to add a new Pokemon to your party.
The first time I saw Zangoose I was like, “Dayum, that’s a badass Pokemon!” Then I used one on my team in Ruby and was like, “Yeeeaaahhhh, naahh…” Honestly, I could never put my finger on why I was unhappy with it. Something just didn’t do it for me. Maybe if it had a pre-evolution I would have liked it better? Hmmm maybe I need to give Zangoose another chance.
I think it might have something to do with the fact that single-stage Pokemon are typically boring to use because there is no anticipation of an evolution.
When you level up Pokemon with multiple stages, it’s exciting because every time it hits a new level, it’s that much closer to reaching its new form. But with single-stage Pokemon like Zangoose, all you’re really looking forward to are new moves (and Zangoose doesn’t learn anything particularly interesting other than Crush Claw).
Zangoose is actually pretty decent in game because it gets that Normal-type STAB running off that nice base 115 Attack, but it’s fairly boring overall (and also really frail; it’s definitely no Tauros).
It definitely needs an evolution (or at least a regional variant).
I love Zangoose, really cool design. Movepool is super wide even for a normal type. It’s that cursed 90 speed stat that ruins it, really dangerous sweeper in lower tiers though, I’ve used it a lot. We need a regional form with 73/115/60/40/60/110 or something, there are enough Mongoose species to go around.
That said, Slaking would undoubtedly be my favorite gen 3 normal if it wasn’t for Truant. It has the evolutionary line angle and a really cool one at that, Vigoroth stands out among middle evolutions. Not to mention Norman! Come to think of it, Stall (that weird ability that only Sableye has) would be a nice HA for Slaking. Still enough to hamper it but would make it much more usable.
The fact that it can usually do major damage despite Truant says it all. If you don’t have the right status, protect or fighting move at hand then you’re facing a monster.
