This^^.
I remember in my poke-nerd circles pre gold/silver release all the hype was pika-blu, and all the ridiculous theories surrounding him.
Maybe if they changed his name
Man. Pikablu was the stuff of legend on the playground. That and the prerelease clefable. Rumors and theories flying. It was a fun time to be alive
Charizard.
I’m surprised that there are merch, cards, and even stories about any other Pokémon.
All Pokémon should just be some form of Charizard, just with different stats and typing.
I think schyter has decreased a lot in popularity.
He got a bunch of screen time in season 2 of the anime
He got a cool steel type Evolution in gen 2 games (and was almost a free win in bug catching contest)
He was One of the coolest (and expensive) cards of jungle some years ago, before getting overshadowed by the eeveelutions
Nowadays I don’t see much merch of schyter, the last card i saw of him was a common one and don’t see much use in games (even with the boost bug types had in the movesets since… gen4?)
Most non-Gen 1 Pokemon.
Thought Zoroark would be way more popular. Gives me similar vibes to lucario when it first came out.
I feel like these mons would be more popular if gamefreak hadn’t made their stats and moves so bad in GSC
One of my all time faves. I’m working in an ex era holo set. Again, if it’s stats in game were better people would probably like tropius more
My pick for these types of threads is usually this guy. I’ll never understand how much more shine (literally) Kabutops got through out the TCG. I love kabutops too but still…
Omastar was always 2-3 rarities below the dome fossil
Agree with Absol. The mega too which is even more fluffy and emo:
Fluffy mammalians in general, like these:
All heil the lord helix, how can a God be underrated?
I actually think Absol is pretty popular, especially for a non-Gen 1 Pokemon. One of my favorite Pokemon of all-time, too!
Donphan and Ursaring were actually both pretty good in GSC, particularly Donphan who saw a lot of use in competitive play in the early days and still gets some play now (I’m sure @c0ll3ct0r can attest to this). Both have pretty good stats.
Agree on Granbull, though. It didn’t really take off until it got its Fairy typing in Gen 6. Then it became pretty solid.
Insane how Kabutops got a million holos (and even a Crystal and a Shining) in the WOTC era and Omastar never even got a single holo.
Agree with many of these.
But what about M O T H?
Volcarona is such a weirdly underrated Pokémon with so much going for it. The design, the typing, the stats and the “almost-legendary” framing it has in BW…how is it not more popular?!
the one that looks like an anchor and a ship wheel combined
Both are trapped in the limbo of GSC borderline, Ursaring more so than Donphan who as you said saw some action back in ancient times.
Other than extreme exceptions there is no Donphan to be seen in GSC for many years but some very brave people try to use it in ADV once in a while, with limited success. Not the same defensive utility as the rare ADV Steelix (another pokemon Skarmory laughs at all day) and not an offensive threat like the even rarer ADV Rhydon. Donphan definitely had it’s hay day in BW, with a legitimate role in OU.
Ursaring has never been any good in OU unfortunately (I’ve used it more than once) but it’s a very fun Pokemon to use in the Stadium 2 cups as that nuclear Hyper Beam actually OHKO’s a lot of stuff.
base 1st ed nidoking is shockingly in the bottom 3 or 4 holos from base. Always odd to me to see it similarly ranked to poliwrath and magneton
