Pokemon now holds the record for most expensive TCG card. Illustrator live auction is nearing 16 Million USD

Logan Paul is a gentleman and a scholar. If he is involved, I have no doubt everything is above board and legitimate.

I’d value several other cards higher but this is the OG one that got hyped up and told to the public to be the rarest. It’s having it’s moment. Once everyone’s cashed out to their friendly neighborhood Venture Capitalist overlords, another trophy or rare promo will get this kinda hype and hopefully have its day.

if you’ve spent more than really big number on collectibles in the trailing 12 months, I’ll take your opinion that people who don’t collect cards aren’t allowed to have opinions seriously.

Some of the most committed, passionate and erudite Pokemon collectors I know spend the little amount of extra cash they have on the hobby they love. On the other hand, the loudest and most ignorant “collectors” this hobby has are the ones throwing the highest amount of money at it.

My comment was more so directed at people who seem to speak the loudest on illustrators and the really high end of pokemon, that have no exposure to the high end market in Pokemon.

So what I’m getting from this thread is that it’s finally time to invest in bananas?

Unfortunately such a card as a PSA 10 1997 1st place doesn’t exist. There is one registered at PSA but it is mislabelled :

The text doesn’t match the 1st tournament, this one is the 2nd tournament’s text :

Wait wait, since you brought up the bananas, you know you can get a whole bunch of them for 2 bucks at the grocery store instead of buying them individually from Starbucks of all places for the same price, right? Think of all the money you’re just throwing away!

The name says it all:

When you are so use to rug-pulls, crashes, meme coins, FTX style scams , and other scum of the earth, it makes sense he perceives this as another “crypto style” pump and dump. What he doesn’t realize is the mass majority of people collecting and trading pokemon have a genuine interest in pokemon besides financial gain. Where 90%+ of people in crypto are in it for a quick buck as shown as the “normalized” halfin-ings.

There is no other universal traded asset class that everyone expects the investment to half every so many years. This is chaotic and only for the young that can wait out for the next bull run.

Yes I do expect the market to cool down in the next year (I hope so). For it to keep on growing naturally, but please look back at 2020. A large majority of the truly hard to get cards never saw their pre-2020 prices.

Screw what others say about this take. This is 100% acurate and I see it everyday. Just 100% noise that people need to learn to block out.

Did you know 60% of Americans can’t cover a $1,000 emergency?

Only way I think this doesn’t happen is on the slim chance PokĂ©mon finally delivers an S-tier new generation that can compete on popularity with gen 1/2/3. Then all of its sets and merchandise will continue the current momentum

Isn’t this the longest (and strong in amplitude) hype cycle yet ? How long was the COVID one ?

This one started with the release of TCG pocket in October 2024 and saw multiple successive phases of growth in different subset of the market. There was a hype phase for modern, then sealed modern, now it’s vintage. Most predictions I’ve seen online have failed at this point. It’s been so interesting to participate in this hobby for the past 2 years, I wonder what the future holds

I let it settle a bit
it was on the news and everything. Even tech websites covered it.

Then
Rattle published a video. The card has been bought by another Finance/Crypto Bro with a shady website plan.

This Illustrator will come up for sale again within 2 years, making 20 million just to slush money around.

:soccer_ball: <---- This is a football, not a “soccer ball”. Please refer to the sport as such on a worldwide basis other than the 2-3 countries that invented a new name for it based on their countries primary national sports.

Yes I am aware its known as “soccer” in the USA, Canada (maybe) & Ireland (we’ve Gaelic Football) but world wide its Football.

The above is not to be taken seriously, I’ve just not seen it been referred to (wrongly) on a global scale before
