Paypal: Case Opened: Unauthorized Transaction! Need Advise!

Today morning I woke up to a email from paypal saying:

“We are writing to let you know one of your buyers opened a case for this transaction. The buyer stated that they did not authorize this purchase…” and they froze that amount of money in my account.

On December 4th a buyer had purchased a PSA grade item from me that was close to 300$ and now they are disputing the charge exactly a month later. I don’t want to lose out on 300$ plus the card! This is the first time this has happen to me, and I need some advice!

My question would be: How will paypal handle the case? And what is the best thing I can do to put myself in a favorable situation?

If you shipped with tracking to a confirmed address, which you always should, you will win the case backed by their seller protection. When they request information from you just provide the tracking number and a screenshot of the tracking showing it as delivered. It may take a while but you will win the case just be polite and provide only the information as needed when needed. Do not reach out to or harass the buyer.

If you did not track it then may they have mercy on your soul and best of luck.

Thank you for the fast reply and advice! Yes I had shipped it with tracking! I will be patient, and follow your advice!

As long as you have tracking that shows it was delivered then you should be good on your end. I had this happen to me right before Christmas for an item that was delivered in mid October, exactly 2 months I believe. PayPal notified me that an unauthorized case was opened and they pretty much handled it. Saw that the item was delivered and covered me.

Unfortunately if the guy really is trying to scam you it doesn’t matter what PayPal says. Even if they side with you, the guy could just file a chargeback with his credit card and there’s nothing PayPal can do for you.

oh gosh :sob:

When this happen to you, you didnt have to get involved, paypal just took care of it?

Yeah, the only time I’ve ever had to respond was when there was no tracking number included on a single that I’d sold. This last time where tracking and delivery was shown PayPal took care of it themselves and notified me once or twice.

I see, that make sense. Thanks!

Hey! I was just wondering, was this through ebay? or just a pure paypal transaction? did you ship to the registered address on their paypal? and ship tracked and signed for to the said address? Did you speak with the person prior? and what country was it?please

@geg89 Sale through ebay with tracking showing delivered. Where can i check if they are registered or not. My paypal info is not showing that information for this buyer. USA. His recent feedback shows that they do buy trading cards as they have purchased card from trading card stores like trollandtoad, cardrush, nygaming etc. and the most recent feedback was left dec 29th.

Sorry I meant when you shipped out to them, where did you get their address from? was it was the one on ebay/paypal that they have listed as theirs. Or did they send you a message etc with address details? I am only curious because if it was the address given to you after the transaction by ebay/paypal and not from the buyer. You ahve gone by the book with everything…so it is strange they are trying to claim it back.
Hopefully it gets resolved and the buyer sends the card back to you…the actual one you sent or paypal sort it. Ive heard of scams like this before(not saying this is but maybe they got cold feet…) so just be careful and if it is sent back to you…be sure to record opening the package! just incase. Im not sure the kind of resolution this type of situation can give but I guess just co operate fully with paypal etc and fingers crossed they sort it
There is no reason it shouldnt be in your favour and even if it isnt…they should have to send the card back…

Yeah it was sent to the ebay/paypal address that was provided to me through ebay. Yeah hopefully everything works out. I might reach out to Paypal later today.

I’m sure paypal’s seller protection has you covered as long as you have the tracking information as proof. Paypal will take care of this. Don’t worry.

Paypal will cover you if it’s a charge back. I have had this happened to me. I provided proof of tracking to a confirmed address

As @elam18 mentioned this is incorrect. Paypal will side with you regardless of if the source is a cc chargeback or paypal claim. If you follow their guidelines for seller protection you will be covered. Tracked shipping to a confirmed address with proof of deliver. And over $750 you have to add signature. I have this come up once a month or so for transactions ranging from 30 days to 180 days unfortunately.

I win every single one where I had tracking to a confirmed address. Sometimes code buyers or single buyers <$10 (untracked) pull that trick 4-5 months out and I lose every time. I always report them and block them through whatever channels possible and message paypal support to fight it though. I hope that if they ever try it again down the line to anyone else and they have those remarks on their file that they will have less success scamming in the future.

Sometimes it’s best to bite the bullet and just take the card back.
Most cards have, or will, go up since early December.

Can you give us a link to the listing
And
What’s the buyers ID

I actually called paypal to see whats going on, and they unfroze the funds they were holding from me and told me similar advice that @gottaketchumall mentioned. They are working to resolve the chargeback fast and said i am protected by the seller protection.

This happens all the time in the sneaker world which is why I only sell to people who has done mutral business with

Bank always overrides PayPal

I think PayPal will ask him to send the card back which he will but it won’t be the card

Unless things have changed, the buyer would have to send the item back to you. Years ago they didn’t, and buyers in some countries (i.e. South Korea) took huge advantage.

If the buyer has to send your item back, make sure to document when you open the return package. Some sketchy buyers will return crap and claim they returned your item. So video the opening just in case, and maybe have witnsses. Seems extreme, but documentatio is your friend.

Good Luck.
