A guy on eBay and I were hashing out a deal on a collection. He offered to sell all his remaining nearly complete WOTC sets plus an unlisted Neo Destiny set for $750.
We have argued about how to go about payment. He wants PayPal F&F. I want to G&S, but I’m still getting a feeling for eBay and making offers that cut eBay out of the deal.
I’m looking for advice from more experienced buyers/sellers about the nature of these, let’s say, back room eBay deals.
I should add, when I tried to pay G&S Thursday night, via his provided phone number, PayPal kept returning an error. IDK if that signifies anything about the seller, but it sure made me question whether or not this would be a headache
Were you communicating through eBay directly? As the seller would be in total breach of eBay’s t&c’s.
Since the seller is asking for friends and family payment, the seller would obviously be looking to make this sale externally, this would mean you’d have no protection if nothing shows up in the mail and would also hamper your ability to get a refund through paypal if the sale goes awry.
In all likelihood they are trying to scam you, at the very least, if you are willing to pay the G&S (which I wouldn’t encourage) and they decline that option then its even more likely to be a scam.
Also $750 seems very low for such a large collection, especially if the cards are in good condition.
My honest advice would be to report the seller to eBay and walk away from the deal.
Fossil, Challenges, Genesis, Discovery, plus a partial unlisted Destiny, no shinnings.
Weirdest part, he made the first offer, $875, then lowered it to $800 simply because I asked to know what cards were missing from the Destiny set. I got the sense that they are desperate for money.
Ebay tracks your messages, and if you were discussing and off ebay transaction, they will impose a restriction of somekind.
Also I wouldnt send F+F to some random person…ever! unless you receive the item first. However I cant see him sending first, maybe a middle man?
Or just do it through ebay if that is where it is? Get him to do a tailored listing for you. I get that the fees postage etc are a big hassle, but it is the safest.
I would be very very careful in my approach to this deal, if it seems too good to be true, and there are red flags, then walk away.
In that case the price does seem more reasonable, still, if they needed cash they could still carry out the sale through eBay, from my perspective it seems like they want to have their cake and eat it too (I.e. no cards for you).
