I have a holo card that has silvering on the upper edge. I’ve been looking at video’s of Ultra Pro and Pro-Mold one touch magnet cases. The magnet on the Pro-Mold case is positioned a little bit lower, closer to where the top of the Pokemon card will be. My question is can the magnet have a negative effect on the silvering? And that goes for holographic cards in general too?
I would like to use the Pro-Mold magnet case because then I can also put the card into a penny sleeve. Can anyone confirm if a card in Ultra Pro’s normal penny sleeves will fit in this case?
Silver is not magnetic so you shouldn’t have anything to worry about.
When first reading the question I actually chuckled because I believed “silvering” was just the term used because of how the damage looks. Surely our Pokemon cards weren’t being made with precious metal. Turns out there might actually be a bit of silver in there after all. Googled a bit and found a lot of chemical info I don’t understand but silver did keep popping up in reference as one of the materials used in creating the holographic layer.
Cards move around in one touch cases. Only had 2 sellers ship a card to me with one touch cases. Both times a corner was bent in. If it’s bad for shipping, its bad for storing your cards too. You are going to hold and look at these all the time. Every time you place your card back in the box, it can move around in that case.
I know the cards aren’t made of silver, I was just referencing the commonly used phrase. My question remains though; whatever the holo-foil is made out of, is it magnetic?
And regarding one touch cases not being good, the case I’m looking at is made by Pro-Mold. It has a differently sized interior so that a regularly sized penny sleeve (with a card in it) can fit in there.
Well, if the foil is being “pulled” by the magnet, the silvering would not appear on the edge, but disappear… Unless you’re suggesting that it’s being stretched or something… Yeah, no offense intended, but this sounds ridiculous to me. What is far more feasible IMO, is that the top edge is being caught in the closure of the card and the border ink is being slowly chipped or pinched-off.
I used one touch cases/perfect fits for years and was never 100% happy with them. Mainly just due to the slim tolerances between both the sleeves and the case. Admittedly this resulted into some damage to important cards when I was not taking my time but that’s on me. More recently, pro-mold released a similar magnetic case that fits a card inside of a standard penny sleeve, hallelujah. Since then, I’ve ordered a few hundred of them and have never had an issue, they rock! This is now my new go-to and a much better solution IMO.
The increase in possibility of damaging your card greatly increases when using perfect fits. No reason to do it if it’s being toploaded, semi-rigid sleeved, or hindered with only a penny sleeve
