Hello all, I found my old cards in a shoebox; and this was a really interesting card I stumbled upon that has the most extreme off-centering I’ve seen (even among my English cards). Is this type of off-centering unique to Japanese cards? My understanding is that Japanese cards had less centering issues compared to English cards. I was considering at the very least getting the card authenticated (may as well get it graded in the process), but am bummed thinking about how this unique feature will chip away at its grade.
I’m focused more on completing some of my old Gen I sets, so I’ve neglecting considering this beautifully deformed card!
When something is that OC, you can get a higher grade with OC as a qualifier. You can request this qualifier. Example: Mint card, would be 9, can get a 9 OC. But some people don’t like the qualifiers, so then that same mint card with no qualifier would get a 6 or 7 depending on how bad centering is.
Yours is clearly not mint so condition has to be taken into account as well as OC setting the bar lower from the start. It looks like a 5 or 6, just based off the look of those limiting pictures. If OC grade then perhaps 7 or 8. Hope that mark on the back isn’t an indent.
@brendantheclayboy , Ah! that’s very interesting! I had yet to hear about being able to request qualifiers. Thanks! I checked and it appears to be a scuff mark (not an indent) where some of the gloss is faded. Are you aware of how common this degree of off-centering is amongst Japanese cards?
You can’t request qualifiers with PSA, you can only request NO qualifier. They will hand them out based in the time of day, phase of the moon and whether or not the grader has had their lunch yet
If you choose to go the grading route, cgc is the only established company that has demonstrated expertise with errors. I would choose them
Otherwise its really neat to see such a misaligned cut on a Japanese card, especially one that is desirable even without the error. In my experience, I dont see many cards like this that aren’t the corocoro shining mew
@rememberremoraid , it is not common at all. Many JP cards are slighly off, but not super OC.
Oh yeah right, thanks @pkmnflyingmaster, for the recall. Forgot you can’t select them–you select you don’t want. Just like everything else at PSA you can’t tell them what to do, but only what not to do (in most cases heh)
@dcs, thanks I was oblivious to CGC (having only read up on grading via PSA and BGS) and it seems like the right alternative. And @pkmnflyingmaster, ha yeah! My impulse when seeing the card was to chuckle a bit. It’s very neat. I really appreciate you all (including @brendantheclayboy) confirming my suspicion that it’s a pretty oddball card. I’ll definitely cherish it (seems like my 6-10 yr old self sure did!)
