Shocking information! I think the whole consensus was they’re 1st Edition.
Thanks for the great info! I have opened a starter deck I got from Japan in order to see if by chance they had no symbol, but mine were symboled aswell. It seems the earliest run of starter deck cards were perhaps the ones with no symbols, but definitely doesn’t make them 1st edition. Still, they are likely an early run (just guessing).
That means the rares and the holos are probably considerably rarer than the uncommons and commons (I’d have to actually calculate the odds of getting each individual card, but it probably works out this way). Since you could only get one rare and one holo in a deck, that should make them tougher to come by.
I initially thought what Claire pointed out. The gym decks, or at least the ones I have do not have rarity symbols. I thought it was the same for base but never investigated it.
Has anyone ever opened an actual base deck with no rarity symbols? If so, is there anything to discern them from others?
Were the variants in design of the box? Just curious.
I swear, if you have an extra Electrode, all my woes would be over. Also, if you have any extra unlimited Voltorbs or Electrodes from other sets 
I am very curious to know exactly how to tell which of the Base decks contained the no rarity ones though, if there is even a way.

Anyway, I’m glad to see the no-rarity cards finally beginning to get their due. I believe I was the first person to write in English about these cards, way back in 1999-2000. My original article appeared in Pojo’s Pokemon magazine.

For several months, I’ve been (slowly) searching my writing archives for all of my Pojo articles. I haven’t yet located the one about the no-rarity cards, and now wonder whether I might have only written that email to my friend who ran Pojo.
It might have been discussed already, but is there any way to tell if a booster box holds these no rarity cards?
A message I received regarding my PSA 10 Pikachu I just listed. And yes, it was sent in all caps.
