@viperfox said:The no-symbol cards come from the starter pack, which has 60 cards from the set at total random. Even states so on the archive pages of the PTCG site. ※デッキの内容はパックごとに異なります。Contents of the decks differ in every pack. Having opened one of these packs myself I can verify this as well as the non-symbol-ness of them.

Shocking information! I think the whole consensus was they’re 1st Edition.
Thanks for the great info! I have opened a starter deck I got from Japan in order to see if by chance they had no symbol, but mine were symboled aswell. It seems the earliest run of starter deck cards were perhaps the ones with no symbols, but definitely doesn’t make them 1st edition. Still, they are likely an early run (just guessing).
That means the rares and the holos are probably considerably rarer than the uncommons and commons (I’d have to actually calculate the odds of getting each individual card, but it probably works out this way). Since you could only get one rare and one holo in a deck, that should make them tougher to come by.
I initially thought what Claire pointed out. The gym decks, or at least the ones I have do not have rarity symbols. I thought it was the same for base but never investigated it.
Has anyone ever opened an actual base deck with no rarity symbols? If so, is there anything to discern them from others?
Aha, that makes me happy I should know by now that everyone is aware that I am searching for the torbs. I couldn’t even imagine searching through that much bulk I get tired of looking through a few hundred cards lol
I need to pay closer attention to the main area of the UPCCC. I’ve been missing all sorts of juicy discussions!
Anyway, I’m glad to see the no-rarity cards finally beginning to get their due. I believe I was the first person to write in English about these cards, way back in 1999-2000. My original article appeared in Pojo’s Pokemon magazine.
Thanks for posting that link to the online article.
For several months, I’ve been (slowly) searching my writing archives for all of my Pojo articles. I haven’t yet located the one about the no-rarity cards, and now wonder whether I might have only written that email to my friend who ran Pojo.
A message I received regarding my PSA 10 Pikachu I just listed. And yes, it was sent in all caps.
“WTF . 700 FUCKING DOLLERS. ARE YOU HIGH. YEAH IT RANKED 10 ON PSA DNA SCALE AND THATS REALLY HARD. IT IS IN JAPANESE. BUT 700 FUCKING DOLLERS. THIS ISNT EVEN A BASE SET CARD. IF IT WAS BASE SET, IT WOULD HAVE THE 1ST EDITION SYMBOL. ITS AN UNLIMITED EDITION CARD. PLZ. YOUR ON CRACK IF YOU THINK THIS IS WORTH 700 DOLLERS. $40 MAX IS WHAT THIS SSHOULD BE BOUGHT AT.”
