Next collectible boom?

You are probably referring to @pokemondentist. You can probably find the post in his search history!

Edit: @martin beat me to it!

Was such a good read. I love finding such stories about pokemon TCG. Too bad there is not that much stuff on youtube.

It kinda feels like nowadays “chase cards” like Lugia, Moonbreon, Giratina/etc. having that charizard status. These are our current “heroes of the playground” and even kids know about those.

Yeees that was it. Thank you, @martin and @smpratte.

So it was November 19. That was really really close to the big boom. Quite impressive in my opinion.

He really had good timing for knowing what to buy since we now know a year later, base set would be on the rise.

I always like looking up older threads, it brings back nice memories (especially before the Pokemon Go boom)

This post could also be a good argument that Pokémon will see another boom in the next ~10 years, when the average collector who was a kid in the 2000s will reach their 40s.

Everything runs in cycles. There will almost certainly be another big jump in demand, but whether it is caused by age of the consumer base is anyone’s guess. If I had to put my thumb on it, I would say that a special anniversary, a new game (or old game rereleased on the Switch), a boost in the economy, etc. would lead to another drive in demand. :person_shrugging:

Beanie Babies. It has to be.
Lol I didn’t read this before I posted.

I feel like there will be something connected to switch. Switch was insanely popular (still is) and during covid many people were sitting and playing games like Animal Crossing. There are so many kids that into switch. They surely will always have good memories about it.

Taco Bell party packs will be the next big thing. Collectables are old news. Everyone knows that the big money is going to be in hoarding old taco bell and trying to flip it on ebay. Its probably going to be some tiktok trend at some point so just wait until some dumb teenagers come up with the idea and you will be rolling in the dough.

I think the dentist is right about holding base charizard for longer term. I know for sure i want to have a full 1st edition base holo set displayed as an art piece instead of a lets say a painting when im older. Instead of buying it in 10 years i started to accumulate almost all the cards in the past year because i think they might be unattainable in the future.

Everyone is thinking about what they grew up with. It could be some new merch/collectible based on games kids have been playing in the last 5 years (e.g. minecraft/fortnite/whatever).

I enjoyed reading this discussion, many good thoughts here.

I am researching consumer behavior, and for those of you interested in a more academic answer to this question, I can recommend a recent literature review on this topic (link below). Although not published in a top journal, it provides quite a good overview of the field.

Lee, C., Brennan, S., & Wyllie, J. (2022). Consumer collecting behaviour: A systematic review and future research agenda. International Journal of Consumer Studies , 46 (5), 2020-2040.

Note: Most publishers require a university account to read and download but Google Scholar often shows legal, public versions.

Happy reading.

An impact factor of 9.9 is excellent. This is a very good journal!

I noticed a huge upward trend in my banknote collection. I inherited a collection of European bills, mostly Czech ones (which is quite a niche market) and some are selling for 4-5x more than what they were worth three years ago. Obviously this is such a niche that I don’t see it becoming the ‘next collectible boom’ anytime soon, probably ever.

Nonetheless, I think a bigger boom will happen in original video game art (game boxes, prelims, storyboards etc) - I see more and more original artworks gaining interest on HA - the more famous the game and/or artist, the higher the price. Given that every piece is one of a kind I can see this spiral out of control very fast like comic art did.

Thank you for making me aware of this! The new IF’s came out last month and it looks like this really jumped. Most business schools would still not rank it as top tier (f.x. in the UK, it is a level 2 out of 5 levels). Nevermind, I recommended because I think it is good, so please read if interested

I didn’t know this. But even better is that they’re shiny versions! And limited edition! What a great marketing move, and so collectable :ok_hand: I, for one, will certainly be diversifying my portfolio to include some Beanie Babies.

Please god. I had so many that I’m sure my parents were worried about me.

Times were so simple then…

(low, sizzling hiss) They can be simple again… if you buy Bionicle…

Bionicles are awesome but I watched one of the old movies on a stream the other day and it was… not good.
