I think just about everything “boomed” in 2020/2021. Stocks, real estate, artwork, NFTs, cryptos, collectibles, video games, etc. Some have totally collapsed since then, while others have seen more modest declines/corrections from the highs. Going forward though we’re entering a much different economic time in terms of interest rates and other factors fundamentally compared to 2020/2021 and prior. I do believe that collectibles like Pokemon are absolutely worth owning going forward, I just think now though that the returns could be at times more linear than exponential. However, it’s entirely possible we could see exponential moves in certain cards or sets over the long-term still.

In fact, we’ve already seen this happening with Japanese S&M era and even XY era cards this year. Huge moves up on many cards like the Poncho Pikachu’s and other Art/Trainer (Waifu) type cards. I happened to make some big gains on some of my S&M and XY cards due to this, while my WOTC cards have been more flat in comparison. So I think it’s just good to not have too high of expectations for the market or cards you own so you won’t be disappointed.

A lot Modern Pokemon continues to do very well, both the singles and sealed boxes. Things are really healthy right now all things considered. I’m personally very happy with the state of Pokemon as both a collectible and investment. With other collectibles/investments people are carrying some very heavy and illiquid bags around from 2020/2021 compared to the vast majority of Pokemon cards.

If most Pokemon cards even return 10% a year over the next 20 years I’d be happy with that. The collector base for Pokemon is still young and so there could still be more growth in the long-term yet. I think too when these big booms happen so many people think they’re going to make it rich quick and easy, but a lot of the time people are just chasing yesterdays news with investments. You have to be patient and you can’t expect unsustainable returns each and every year.

With this downturn in certain cards/sets, it’s a great time to buy if you can. That’s why I bought a 1st Ed Base Charizard this year and I got him 70% off from the all time high prices for the grade I bought. I’m thrilled to say I own one now. So just take advantages of the booms and busts and you’ll be happy I think.

Aoki is now grading vinyl and other music media so probably that tbh

I have it on good authority that antique porcelain gnome salt and pepper shakers are expected to experience a meteoric rise in value. Stonk now or pay the price. One of my sources (Gary V) leaked a PSA case for these.

Almost finished with my Porcelain Gnome Master Class e-book…

I don’t have any of these, but something tells me it’s going to be sealed Lego sets.

Side note, there’s definitely a trend of artist releasing more physical media. Lots of vinyl and even cassettes being printed and recorded.

I think the recent japanese promo rise and cool off is the answer. Even if there is a boom, the market is so hyper competitive today that it will cool off faster than 2020. I remember saying multiple times during 2020 that collectible markets quickly self regulate. Today its even more true. Everyone and their dog is competing, which is great for buyers, but difficult for a boom.

Video games will boom again when WATA and Heritage decide it’s time to manipulate the market some more.

But I don’t think whatever the next “thing” is, is something that currently exists.

Hey beanie babies are back didn’t you hear?? They remade some of the old ones … And then immediately retired them lol. BEANIE BABIES TO THE MOON

Vinyl is kinda on the rise since about 5 years. My dad is a vinyl collector for about 45 years now and since I was a child he always has been taken me along to vinyl conventions and stores. When we went to our local vinyl store we almost always had the place to ourselves. Today the store is pretty full with people. He also realized that especially some of his rarer vinyls went up a lot in value.

its pokemon cards again trust

Does anyone remember this dentist from LA (Or Cali?) and his prediction in the old Forum?
I think he posted this in 2018 or 2019 and predicted that the Base set Charizard will be the next big thing.
He wrote about how he was already right about the Brand Supreme being the next booming brand. I guess he was right with the Charizard as well.

Anyone remembers when he wrote that post in the old Forum?

I am neither a clairvoyant nor a dentist but I feel anyone could’ve predicted that Base Set Charizard would be the next big thing.

The fact that you were king of the playground in the 90s if you owned that card should’ve tipped anyone off.

I like your confident prediction in hindsight

What he was more going for was that it will boom soon and that he was properly loading up on it.
Additionally, he wrote quite a long thesis about why now is the right time. Was quite interesting.

Seems like this is the thread. Just looked it up, cool read!
