New to Grading: What Would You Do?

I’ve got a collection of Unlimited Base through Destiny, somewhere in the neighborhood of 16 complete sets and a few near complete. These cards have been stored for decades in a dark, dry, temperate environment, and pressed to prevent warping. These cards are in great condition.

I am think of getting this collection graded but I have one major concern. Is it worth it? These cards are more nostalgic to me than anything. I’ve had them since 6th grade and am likely to keep them for a many more decades. I hesitate to call these an investment, but I can’t deny they are somewhat valuable. I’d like to secure that value and possibly sell off some of the duplicates.

So again I ask, is grading this collection worth it? Or better yet, what would you do with this collection?

I would look at the cost of everything and decide how much value you get out of grading vs the cost to grade. Are you planning on grading every card from every set? Or just the holos? Take a look at some of the values of graded uncommons/commons and you will see that, for the unlimited sets, its most likely not a financially sound decision. Either way you’re going to look at a pretty expensive grading cost + the time it takes to grade.

Personally, I would grade the holos if you are concerned with the long term condition of your cards changing. Grading will preserve the condition of the cards and can improve their value depending on the grades received. Otherwise, if you’re happy with the setup you have now I wouldn’t change anything.

If all the cards were unlimited I personally wouldn’t recommend grading, at best maybe grade the expensive unlimited holo cards that would get a 9 minimum. There’s not much of a demand in psa unlimited holos in comparison to 1st edition, so to answer your question I would not grade your unlimited cards

It’s disappointing that my unlimited cards aren’t worth grading, but I am happy with my collection none the less.

On the topic of grading, how do you calculate the grading cost per card?

I’d personally grade any Unlimited Holo (besides Machamp) that you think would get a 9 or better. At the very least I would get Charizard, Blastoise and Venusaur graded if you are confident in the quality. If you think any holo’s have a chance at being a 10, then it will 100% be worth the cost of grading and shipping to send those in to PSA.

While you’re not going to get rich off Unlimited, I think this is a super cool set and freakin awesome cards to have displayed. At least you’ll know the quality won’t decline and the cards will be well protected.

I’m also a bit partial on this one  My first (and currently only) completed set in the PSA set registry is the Unlimited Holo set. All 9’s except my Zard which I only have at an 8 at the moment. Don’t plan on selling, but just something that I cherish in my collection. And really, isn’t that what it’s all about?

Since you plan on holding these cards a very long time, there’s really no rush to grade them.

If they’re as mint as you say they are, I think it’s worth it. You will get mostly 8s and 9s, but if you score a few 10s it will be more than worth your investment.

You have 200+ holos, why not send in maybe 50 of your best cards/best condition and see how you do? You will get a better idea how to pregrade your cards and see how well you can do.

Like many people said it’s more reasonable to only grade your holos.
If you grade a few minty holos from some of your sets you can always purchase ungraded copies to fill in the blanks your graded cards will leave. Just so you don’t feel like you list a piece of you collection by getting some things graded.

But before anything, make sure it’s in your budget to send cards off.
