So one of my grails just popped up on ebay. I know this card came along with 3 others packaged in Japanese food products (Marumiya) in mid 2015 (July) from some online sources. All of these have quite low pops in a 10:
Pikachu (064/XY-P) POP 29 in a 10
Snorlax (149/XY-P) POP 15 in a 10
Froakie (036/XY-P) POP 6 in a 10
Chespin (148/XY-P) POP 8 in a 10
My question is:
What is a reasonable price to pay for this (if any e4 members have this in their collection), and how rare are these promos actually (did they come quite clean in its original packaging, how many of these existed, how long did the promotion last for)?
If a population is 15 with a total pop of 32, it’s either incredibly rare or incredibly niche. I would probably go with the latter on this one. Too few copies have been graded, but even so, ~50% have come back a PSA 10. Have you considered trying to buy some copies to grade yourself?
Last 10 that I could find sold for $67 many years ago. A PSA 9 sold a few months back for ~$300. I would not pay thousands of dollars for this card with that gem rate. Patience is key on niche cards like this.
This promo campaign was launched around July of 2015 and the way these promos would work is ’ Till stock lasts’. Meaning they would have a number of these cards printed with the Marumiya logo and distributed at participating stores. Once the stock is over, it is over, since they would always run campaigns so it kept rotating. This is the same policy with the Meiji cards as well.
These cards should not be rare but as @dyl mentioned, just super niche that not a lot have been graded. I am guessing it was just the nature of these promos during the XY-P era. The same card artwork was used in tons of promotion campaigns so one card just may have variations with multiple stamps.
It is hard to say a fair value on these because copies have just not been graded or sold enough. It is also hard to find them in sealed condition though, so I personally would pay a bit more premium for sealed since it ensures a bit more guarantee of the condition since these cards always seem mangled or damaged.
I would also wait for the right card to come by. I personally would also never pay multiples of thousands for a card like this.
