MTG Alpha Black Lotus BGS 9.5 $60k+ bid

Brent? Or the actual owner of the card?

God 6 years from now we’re all gonna be so old! I watch MTG vids now of Rudy and his pals at these meetups and I think “wow they’re so old!” Soon we’re all going to die :slightly_frowning_face:
The end.

The actual owner.

As long as I’m alive, none of you are getting old lol.

No I don’t know the owner, could potentially find out since it’s a fresh grade though.

Wouldn’t it be that ‘open boosters’ guy on YouTube ? He opens heaps of old mtg stuff I swear he opened a deck box that was an error and had heaps of rares so maybe it’s his  could be wrong

Not sure what’s triggering the big upswing in mtg recently, but this feels like October through December 2017 for PokĂ©mon where we had a huge surge in prices. Recently, many cards have increased dramatically in prices despite the decline in MTG players. Some people just say it’s people “finally” seeing the true value of these collectibles. Maybe PokĂ©mon’s 2017 run helped people have fresh perspective? I do have to say MTG has grown on me as a collector - I have very few cards - because of the art. I actually like the more adult-oriented art. Modern magic art is better than Modern Pokemon, IMO. I am preparing to start some binder collections for MTG.

Anyways, I digressed a little. I think alpha Black Lotus will still outperform Charizard for years to come - if Pokemon doesn’t have another massive uptick - due to scarcity and notoriety and the deeper pockets of the MTG collectors who are on average older than PokĂ©mon collectors. You rarely see these power 9 alpha cards in gen mint condition being auctioned. Coupled with the recent bull market, this is a perfect time to list. I’m thinking this card will probably end around 75-80k at best since this is a basic 9.5, the lowest 9.5 you can achieve. I think a quad 9.5 or 9.5+ could definitely hit 100k and beyond if we see one auctioned.

Nah he’s only opened one alpha lotus and it stayed in his collection

Do you realise we have a basic 9.5 Zard that ended at $6,400 recently?

I think Charizard has a shot, but it would probably take more than 6 years and I would take BGS 9.5 out of the equation. Even a near perfect 9.5 with a couple 10 subgrades would struggle to earn $20-25k in today’s market. You think it would grow to $60-100k in only 6 years?
PSA 10s might earn $60k, but at that point Lotuses will probably be worth more than double. It’s only pop 7 and Rudy would pay whatever it takes to get the next one to hit the market.

@yz2428 The high end of hobbies is its own entity. For both mtg and Pokemon the high end has done nothing but increase. The 1st ed charizard or this lotus are public examples. There are numerous private deals in both mtg and Pokemon that are completely separate from any general trend.

I freaking love the BGS cases with their golden labels, too bad that PSA is market leader with Pokemon Cards.
Do you guys know how a BGS 9.5 compares to a PSA 9 and PSA 10 price wise?

In general for the most well established higher end cards you have a clear hierarchy as follows.

BGS 10 > PSA 10 > BGS 9.5 > PSA 9 >> BGS 9

BGS 9.5 can vary a ton though within itself whether it is 1 subgrade away from BGS 10 or from BGS 9. “Strong” and “weak” BGS 9.5’s are a real measurable thing whereas within PSA cases it is still discussed but not clearly laid out. So a weak BGS 9.5 can be very near to PSA 9 pricing and a strong one can do quite well and shift towards the PSA 10 pricing albeit still quite a bit lower in general.

When it comes to less well established cards I have actually been able to on occasion scoop up BGS 9.5 cards at sub PSA 9 pricing due to the fact much fewer people are seeking them out.

@gottaketchumall Summarized it pretty well!

I would add I have yet to cross a Pokemon BGS 9.5 to a PSA 10. A BGS 9.5 is a strong 9 for me in Pokemon.

After seeing Gary’s BGS 10 zard, it is by far the most beautiful example I have experienced. This isn’t to say a PSA 10 can’t be as beautiful. PSA 10 naturally has a wider range as there is no 9.5 or black label. This is why BGS 10 may can carry a premium with a premium card.

I have crossed I think 3 BGS 9.5’s to PSA 10’s so far but I think I probably looked over about 100 total BGS 9.5 cards and sent my best 5 for crossover. 3 out of those 5 got it IIRC with the others being PSA 9’s. I have more experience crossing PSA 9’s to BGS 9.5’s and have done that a dozen or two times when I send my best PSA 9’s over. Only specific cards like base 1st, shinings or GS’s make sense to do that at this point though.

I have the original BGS labels kicking around somewhere at home since I cracked them myself but I want to say they were cards that had a bit lower centering grade and higher everything else. Generally a BGS 9 centering card can potentially achieve a PSA 10 especially if it is BGS 9.5+ everything else ideally with a 10 or two on the other subs.

Gary’s two BGS 10 charizard are both with the gold label, right? and he paid close to 100k $ for the second one, if I didn’t misunderstood him in the Leonhart video? I guess a black label charizard BGS 10 would dwarf that price

It was close to $100k with the Shadowless PSA 10 included. We don’t know the exact details, I’m guessing he paid $70-75k or so.

Gary once said he’d pay about $150k for a Black Label. At auction, I have no idea what it would possibly bring
However, I just don’t think we’ll ever see one. You can probably send all 118 PSA 10 copies to BGS and not a single one would earn all 10 subgrades.

in this case even $150k seems to be cheap for a black label Charizard

I am a big fan of BGS cases, because they are thicker and more substantial. it has bit more of a premium feel. I find many of the quad 9.5 cards to be pretty much solid 10s to my eyes (no whitenings, edge wear, surfaces are clean), though I’ve never cross graded. I just compare my psa10s with bgs quad 9.5s and I usually feel the 9.5s are just as good. anyhow, as just a collector, I think the lower premium for bgs is kind of nice. a bit cheaper to collect the same quality cards, but growth is slower.

How do you know who the cosignee is in PWCC auctions?

Don’t bet too much on that my friend.
