MrBubbles Promo Collection - PCG-P Set Completed (My labour of love)

Heartful thanks for stopping by to read through this thread. This is a very special one for me. I began this journey close to 5 years ago and I finally managed to see its end in November of 2023. It feels kind of bitter sweet to be able to check off such a huge goal and know that the chase has finally come to an end. I am very grateful to be able to share my joy with my fellow collectors.

I decided to make this a separate thread to explain my journey a bit more and also that it had a lot of pictures. Apologies in advance for the wall of texts below and many images.

What is PCG-P?

PCG-P promos are promotional card set which just translates to Pokemon Card Game. This era started on March 19, 2004 . This was the successor to the ADV era and with the start of the PCG-P series, the promo suffix changed from ADV-P to PCG-P.

This set contains a total of 154 cards which were distributed from February 2004 to July 2006.

I have included a list with a breakdown on how one could obtain every promo card. This breakdown is my interpretation of how the promo was distributed, so please let me know if there are any inconsistencies.

My Journey

On the outset, when I first glanced at this set, it seemed to be just a filler set since it contained 4 sets of the Meiji Chocolate promos and 3 sets of the McDonalds promos. So when I first started collecting these, I truly did underestimate this set. I thought it would be very tedious but easy to hunt down many of the relatively cheaper promos. However, I was in for a rude awakening when I got to the last 50 or so cards. I realized that the last leg of cards were not only challenging to find, but also taxing on the wallet and required a lot of planning. I decided to just focus on collecting the remainder cards for the better part of the last 2 years to be able to complete this set.

Whenever someone says, energy cards are bulk and boring, I would really want them to have a second look at the energy cards in this set

I almost had a breaking point in this set because I thought that I will never be able to find Battle Road Spring energy set. I buy my cards from Japanese secondary markets and this set of 6 cards, I was never able to find. I was very adamant to get this as a whole set to drive down the costs per card, since the listing I found for individual cards was always very high. Finally after almost 2 years of searching, I managed to get lucky where the seller had listed these cards as “Basic Energy Set”. The seller was however did now the value of these cards, but was very open to negotiating the price. I was finally able to get this card set and that too at a very good price after negotiation.

Meantime, I always enjoyed sifting through my binder looking at the cards I already had. These were some of my very favourites.

Final Hurdle

I kept chipping away diligently, slowly adding cards to this set over the years. However, there were some final challenges that I only managed to finish in this last year. The final 3 cards that seemed the most challenging due to the scarcity and the price point. I really had to plan a lot to be able to get these cards. It also meant that I was only hyper focused on just completing this set and did not make any additional purchases which would not add value to this set. Luckily I was able to negotiate good deals on all 3 cards with the sellers and finally manage to get them.

Final Thoughts

This was a very fulfilling experience for me in terms of my collection journey. I flip through my binder everyday just going over the cards in this set, recollecting the memories and the challenges faced. Finishing this was like catharsis.

I am really happy and proud of this step in my journey. I am very fortunate and lucky to be a part of this group on the forums with whom I can share this completed goal of mine. Over that past year and a half of being active on this forum, I have really connected with lot of collectors and made new friends with whom I have shared this goal of mine and have received encouragement on several occasions.

I am thankful to everyone who takes time to read through this thread and look at the collection. I will always be grateful to this community and the friends I have made. I think the joy of completing this is also in the joy of being able to share this with everyone. I have learnt a lot from so many collectors on this platform and also been inspired by so many more who share their collection stories and journeys.

Thanks as always.
Cheers!

Beautiful collection. I’m envious of the PCL promo, one of the cards I need to eventually get

Huge congratulations on completing such an impressive goal! There is so much underappreciated art among these promos.

I resonate with your approach to collecting; hyperfocusing on one specific selection of cards and making slow, yet diligent, progress is painstaking at times but so rewarding when it works out.

I’m sure you’ve got mercari and yahuoku bookmarks that have seen countless refreshes in your journey.

Congrats again, may this binder bring you much satisfaction and enjoyment in the years to come!

Beautiful collection and you’ve written a fantastic summary. It’s always great to see promos all together in a binder. Your dedication is impressive and I can really see the love which you have for your cards.

Massive congrats Bubbles! Wonderful set and I am sure it was indeed a labor as well love, but definitely stress the labor aspect :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

The energies are incredibly firetastic. They are never bulk, never boring. Not when we have gorgeous holos. But these are some of the best. Also, I don’t know what it is but Pkmn card lab is such a great card. I love it. And of course no one can miss the Raikou and Persian. Crazy.

Huge, huge set, no easy feat. And you must be one of the first if not the first to share this colossal promo set. I knew you were working on it but I’m sure I’m speaking for most that knew that I had know idea it was that many years. I can relate! Cheers man! You deserve it!

Major congrats on completing this set! I really love the detail on this post and it gives a great overview of some of the promos and their distributions. I do agree this must be the best set for cool energies in the entire hobby – especially the battle road ones which are very tough to find.

This is really motivating me to work harder toward completing this set. It’s been really hard to find binder copies of some of the rarer cards (such as 053/PCG-P and 149/PCG-P) so understand how much of a challenge / accomplishment it is to complete this set.

Big congratulations on achieving such a major goal!

I don’t know too much about the different series of Japanese promos, but seeing the variety of the cards, it definitely looks like a fun and interesting set (also saw some arts/cards I never knew existed)! And the different releases of each card just adds to the intrigue.

Congrats again!

When I first learned about the PCG-P Set, I had assumed that only species collectors would give it much attention for a single card or two. And then I met mrbubbles - a scholar with an immense and esoteric knowledgeable on all things Japanese promo collecting.

Seeing these niche promos together with details on the artists and distribution is truly special. Thank you for sharing this and major congratulations, @mrbubbles!

This is amazing, congrats!

I was browsing the collection and got worried when I noticed there was a Gardevoir in it. After I double checked, I saw it was the Meiji promo, which I already have haha.

I’ve said it earlier too but it’s funny how we, including me, have a need to say this even though it’s exactly what people are looking for to see in these threads, photos of beautiful cards and items and stories and experiences behind them, basically the best feeling on E4 to experience the excitement of one’s collection and achievements through these threads and posts

But big congratulations on this massive achievement! It’s always incredible to see such a big and unique framework put together and understand what an effort doing so has been, also interesting to see some of the duplicates within one promo set, especially when the team rocket’s raikou has the same place in binder page with different numbering which i had to check twice since i wasn’t sure if i saw it correctly
