MrBubbles Promo Collection - ADV-P Set

Hello everyone! Thank you for stopping by and taking some time to look through this promo set. I personally think this is a very easy, beginner friendly set for anyone trying to get into Japanese promos and also wanting to finish a complete promo set. None of the cards in the set are particularly rare (barring condition) and it does not contain any prize cards which also makes the cards affordable.

What is ADV-P?

ADV-P promos are promotional card set which just translates to Advanced Generation. This promo era lasted from January 2003 to February 2004 . This was the successor to the P promos and with the start of the ADV series, the promo suffix changed to ADV-P. ADV also ties in with Generation III of Pokemon and gets it’s name due to the games which were released to be played on the Gameboy Advance (GBA).

This set contains a total of 63 cards.

I have included a list with a breakdown on how one could obtain every promo card. This breakdown is my interpretation of how the promo was distributed, so please let me know if there are any inconsistencies.

My Journey

This was probably the the first promo set I thought I would finish. It was cheap, had no prize or rare cards and was a relatively small set with only 63 cards. Fortunately, I got side-tracked with completing the PCG-P set and had to delay completing this set. That being said, there are a few cards in this set which were hard to comeby. When I first started collecting cards for this set back in 2018, I was less tolerant to card conditions for my binders and wanted cards to be NM as possible. This proved a huge challenge, specially for the Shogakukan School promos. Eventually by the time it took me to finish my PCG-P set, which was 5 years down the road, my approach to my binder cards had changed and I was able to pick up some decent looking Shogakukan School promos. My mindset also helped me finish the rest of the set since these 3 cards were just blocking me to finish the rest of the set. I think if I was the same collector I was in 2018, it would have been very difficult to finish this set.

Card Details
Card Set Number
Ash’s Treecko Shogakukan Elementary School magazines (September 2003) 036/ADV-P
May’s Torchic Shogakukan Elementary School magazines (September 2003) 037/ADV-P
Brock’s Mudkip Shogakukan Elementary School magazines (September 2003) 038/ADV-P

As you can see, these 3 were cards given to children in Elementary schools and were insanely hard to come in good condition. I believe they still hold a nice premium in very high grades and are truly conditional rare. They were also one of the first promo cards to have mentions of characters from the Anime.

Some of my other favourite artworks!

This promo set heavily promotes the 6th Movie released by Pokemon - Jirachi Wish Maker" (七夜の願い星 ジラーチ), relased in July 2003. 26 out of the 63 promos are a direct tie-in with the movie, with the 7-Evelen promos consisting of 21 cards, one holo and one non-holo. The Jirachi (025/ADV-P) was a secret card which could be obtained in the promo campaign.

I also feel like the Gen III middle evolutions get some love and are featured in this set, which is nice.

Final Thoughts

Completing any of these promo sets has been a fulfilling experience as always. Looking back, I think it personally seems like a journey of me coming to terms on how to let of of some aspects of collecting. I would like to belive that card condition does not bother me as much as it used to.

I realized soon that once the card is in my binder, in a few months or even weeks, I completely forget which card was in poor or played condition, since they all look great from the front in my binders.

I know it seems easy for me to say it now, but back then it seemed like a real struggle to spend money on less than NM cards. I am happy that I have gotten over the mental hurdle of fixating on card condition. I feel it has made me more relaxed as a collector and also open to taking opportunities which others would let go of.

I would also highly recommend this promo set for anyone who wants to get into the beautiful world of Japanese promos. This is a super chill and easy set to finish, even if you are chasing condition.

Lastly, thank you to everyone on this forum. People have always been super sweet, encouraging and always appreciative of my goals. It feels really good to be sharing this with everyone, which is the culmination of the whole journey. Let me know of your favourites from this set and what you like and dislike.

Thanks as always.
Cheers!

What a great set and journey. I particularly enjoy your sharing of growth as a collector. This looks amazing together and has some very great classic cards. I love the Swampert from this set. I agree the starters with that holo pattern may be the best renditions. The Absolute is also one of my favorites. Thank you for sharing!

Loved to read it all, congrats on finishing another beautiful goal  i’ve been eyeing a bunch of these arts as a lot of them had e-series variants in english, i find it funny that they decided to add some of these promos as regular cards in TMTA but gave them e-series borders unlike the rest of the set, i wonder if they were going to be promos in english too but for some reason there was a change in plans!
