Most Iconic Card for Each Decade

What do you think are the most iconic cards, one for each decade? Not necessarily your favorite, most valuable, or even most interesting—but the cards that are the most recognizable or really most influential.

The '90s and 2020’s seem pretty easy, I would say base Charizard and Moonbreon VMAX respectively, though arguments could definitely made for some other cards. What about the 00’s? The 2010’s? What are your thoughts?

00’s surely has to be Ray gold star.

2010’s is a bit harder… arguably shiny Charizard from Hidden Fates, although the rainbow rare from Burning Shadows, Mewtube or Lati@s Tag Team alt art are also big cards from that (quiet) decade.

I would say 90’s Base Charizard , 2000’s Neo Genesis Lugia vs Rayquaza Gold Star , 2010’s Charizard GX Shiny from hidden fates ? I just remember everyone wanted that card from hidden fates

I can’t decide who wins though for 2000’s

There should be a poll for that. Ray vs Lugia

I think rayquaza developed into a big deal as time went by

But neo lugia was a big deal from day 1

Furthermore, charizard from skyridge was sought after more than Rayquaza. At least for that particular decade

Maybe Gold star Umbreon (Japanese & English) for the 00`?

90s: Base Set Charizard
00s: Ancient Mew
10s: Mario/Luigi Pikachu
20s(so far): Moonbreon

10s is the only one I’d consider other options for, the other 3 are locks for being the most iconic.

English

  • 90s - Base Set Charizard
  • 00s - Gold Star Rayquaza
  • 10s - Hidden Fates shiny Charizard GX
  • 20s - Moonbreon

Japanese

  • 90s - Base Set Charizard
  • 00s - CoroCoro Shining Mew
  • 10s - Collection Moon SR Lillie / GX Battle Boost SR Lillie
  • 20s - Worlds Yokohama 2023 Pikachu ex

I put both Lillie because they redefined how expensive modern JP set cards can get in 2017. Worlds Yokohama was the culmination of Japan’s largest modern boom, was the only time Worlds hosted in Japan, and Pikachu ex was the last JP-exclusive card of its kind to be released (as of now)

These are the ones my non-Pokémon friends have mentioned or owned, and I think they’ll hold nostalgic appeal outside the hobby in the long run, despite any issues with release I’m looking at you Van Gogh.

Personally, these are Iconic to me.

I feel like this question is difficult to answer aside from the obvious ones like Charizard. Since money has come into the hobby there are going to be additional answers for each decade VS what people think it should have been now. Gets even messier as time goes on to tell what people actually like against whats being shilled.
