The 3rd Best English Set Card (Part 1)

The title says it all: what is the 3rd best english set card?
This is Part 1, where users submit cards for consideration, and part 2 will be the vote!

This goes without saying, but #1 & #2
106999_in_1000x100088636_in_1000x1000

Methodology used to determine the top 2 spots -
obvious (I dont wanna hear it, this is about #3)

No rules, just any english set card that you think is iconic, nostalgic, important etc etc

Since I think your idea is a set card, and not something oddball like trophy cards…

I’ll ignore and jump over all the other gold stars and maybe say these are candidates

I know you personally don't like the crystal fellas, and I agree and this charizard art is imo, one of the least interesting. But I think the buzz around them all puts these all near the top. Umbreon vmax and latios latias might be too new to qualify, but they are ones that went crazy and took a lot of attention. of the shining pokemon charizard is just charizard so I picked him to represent the shining guys.

Belgium…

Vileplume was one of the first cards i found of Belgium print. Its pokemon power separated it from the rest and is probably the card that led me to discover how do I identify things like Australia. It also helped separate the other USA printings with the unique colors. While. this wasn’t the exact copy I had at the time, printing has historic significance.

Not necessarily all favourites, but these are a few more poignant ones to consider.

Base Machamp: Iconic, and everyone owned one.

Neo Revelation Shining Gyarados: First appearance of a shiny Pokémon in the tcg. Representation of the iconic red Gary encounter in GSC. God tier artwork.

Unseen Forces Celebi EX: One of the most beloved ultra rares from the era. Top notch representative of the introduction of “next level” rarity beyond holo in the tcg.

Phantom Forces Dialga EX: Only silver card in existence. Unique secret rare that looks stunning in person.

And if I can cheat a bit, Ancient Mew: One of the most iconic cards ever made. Looks amazing. Fully conveys the mystique of the Pokémon that ruled the playground rumour mills of the late 90’s.

It received a 25th Anniversary reprint because it’s goated. 10/10 in my book.

As a mix of value & nostalgia, I agree with @c0ll3ct0r for 1st edition Neo Genesis Lugia:

Personally, mostly looking at just nostalgia + artwork, I’d say Shining Gyarados is #2 before Rayquaza GS, though. :person_shrugging:

I’d dispute the gold star Ray being part of the list tbh, I think it’s a cool card and obviously very expensive due to rarity but if we’re talking iconic it wouldn’t break into my top 50. I opened packs of ex Deoxys without even knowing it existed.

I would say Neo Genesis Lugia and Shining Gyarados would be up there for me. I’ve also seen images of Moonbreon about a million times over the last five years so it’s hard to argue with it being high on the list as well. Until the last 12 months I feel like a lot of modern collectors didn’t even know gold stars were a thing.

Shining Gyarados imho is slightly cooler than Lugia. Being a Shining imho makes it naturally a tier above, and also the artwork is a bit more interesting.

In my heart:

But in reality I think it’s Neo Lugia or Ancient Mew, already mentioned above. :slightly_smiling_face:

Took me a while to decide, but i think the OG Pikachu is one of, if not the most iconic set card

Isn´t it just Base Set Charizard, Blastoise and Venusaur?

But if I were to make it more exotic, my third card would be Jungle Snorlax. Jungle was the second set and Pokémon was still in it´s original hype phase. This Snorlax respresented that set just as the starter trio represented Base.
