Modern era cards with the biggest losses in the past 5 years

Cards like Zeraora GX, SR Acro Bikes, FA Lillie, FA Cynthia, SR Frying Pans and any other meta relevant cards from Ultra Prism up until Lost Thunder are going to tank in value once the TCG rotation happens in early August. FA/SR pikarom and FA/SR MewMew will dip in price too due to the decks no longer being good post rotation

I wonder if FA Cynthia/Lillie psa 10s will drop in price considering there should still be demand for the art since they are extremely popular characters

I remember buying a Next Destinies booster box a few weeks after it came out. I hadn’t even purchased a Pokemon pack in years. But somehow I stumbled upon eBay auctions and I saw the Mewtwo EX going for $70. The box itself was like $90 so I was like I’ll just get the Mewtwo and sell it and then I’ll get all these cards for essentially $20.

Luckily enough, I did pull the Mewtwo EX (NOT the full art version). But then I thought…if it’s $70 now it’s going to be worth more in the future!

I didn’t really understand that the reason why it was so popular was because it was kick-ass in the TCG.

These days, you can buy the same card in NM condition for $5.

Ever since SV49, I am seeing a lot more people submit to BGS due to the black labels, huge misconception…

I don’t know… Flashfire M Charizard SR is getting up there in price. I haven’t really seen a clean raw copy in awhile. I’m not sure if it was a playable card back then. But holy cow, there are so many play version of this card.Evolution Charizard is getting up there in prices as well. But yeah, other than that… I’m not sure.

Someone’s earlier comment on cards losing it values after rotation. That is generally correct, but what I’m noticing is that if that certain format was well respect/enjoy to play, those cards in those era will either eventually goes back up/stay original in value. I know people are buying cheap ex slabs to crack them open to put in their retro decks. Also sometimes a new certain standard card can make an expanded format card even more broken, ie: scoop up net and shaymin EX. Shaymin went through a brief bought out recently. The market for that card was in the high 40s. Now it’s hovering around $20 - 40 still, some people are speculating that card might get banned.

Ultra Prism booster boxes here in about two weeks.

You probably won’t see many. I went through about 10 cases of flashfire when it came out. I believe I got the SRs and one of each mega, plus FA Charizard. A few regular PSA 10 ex cards. For 10 cases worth I ended up with aroun 10 PSA 10 cards. The quality is absolutely abysmal.

Is it really getting a reprint?

Yes

Certainly not me, something incredibly off putting that when you factor in how many are probably sitting waiting to be graded - there is probably over 5000 PSA 10’s in circulation already of this card. I dont see the attraction whatsoever, everyone who pulls one gets it graded and they’re all coming back 10

How do you guys feel about full art Cynthia from Hidden Fates. I’m so hesitant to buy because I know it’s playable and goes for $50 range. My instincts tell me this is a $5-$20 card once out of rotation. But it’s also from Hidden fates so hard to guess what will happen. What do you guys think. Would you buy at current price for your own collection or wait till after rotation?

My post from earlier in this thread leads me to believe that playable cards do indeed drop in price once they’re rotated out of the standard format.

As another example that is very similar to your current predicament: the Skyla full art from Breakpoint is very popular for uh…reasons…and Skyla and Cynthia as CHARACTERS are popular because of similar…reasons. That Skyla card is out of rotation (idk if it was ever playable, but that’s irrelevant to my current point) and is currently about $15-20 in near mint condition. Once the Cynthia card is out of rotations, her appeal will essentially be the same as the Skyla card–the “art” alone.

I’d said you should expect the Cynthia the card to drop in price once Hidden Fates is rotated out. Just my two cents.

If you’re looking to save money, it’s probably better to wait in my opinion. Full art trainers which are playable generally lose value once they are rotated, but cards featuring popular characters such as Cynthia will likely retain a fair bit of value.

Looking at current prices of certain full art trainers tells you that playability factors greatly into the value. You can pick up a full art Professor Sycamore for £5 on eBay now when they used to sell for £20+ easily.

Edit: @mtajaj32 said the same thing I did but quicker

@goldcrest @mtajaj32 Thanks guys that’s what I thought. I just need Cynthia and Guzma to finish my master set of hidden fates. I’ll roll the dice and wait to buy till rotation ends. I’m not huge into collecting trainers in the first place. I only want them to complete the set. They are cool cards but I prefer cards of Pokemon. And yes I understand Cynthia has Pokemon in the art but still. And Guzma looks like the 2020 Hype man :joy::joy:. Probably better on my wallet anyways. I need some time to recover after completing so many collection goals.
