Modern Chase Cards Feel Overvalued Right Now: Are you buying?

Some graded modern cards have shot to the moon in the past few months. To me, it feels artificial and inflated. I would rather wait and let the market cool off before buying.

  • Are you buying graded modern chase cards right now?
  • What are you buying?
  • How many copies are you buying?
  • Why now?

Are you buying graded modern chase cards right now?

nope. I’m staying far far away from things I don’t already have if they have skyrocketed past a price I’m comfy with. Especially ANYTHING from scarlet/violet. These sets are all prime for reprints, and as it stands, plenty of unopened packs and actively being opened every day. I also don’t buy graded cards, but it applies to the free cards as well as those that are encapsulated.

What are you buying?

Things that the newbies don’t know or care about, but slowed down on that too. I’m searching for a playgroup, and so far failing. I might just take my 1000s of code cards and claim them and just play online…if anyone knows a good way to mass upload cards that’d be great!

How many copies are you buying?

What do you think I am? A bank?

Why now?

Because I’m tired of this insanity, so I’m pulling back and waiting for things to chill the heck out. Also the amount of times I’ve been scammed on ebay since surging sparks coming out can’t be a coincidence. Higher scam rate while also reducing the amount of buying? Its only making me buy less than I already am. Its demoralizing.

I bought a couple of umbreons from terastal for 270 each thinking they’d probably go up. I didn’t think think shoot up to over 400 in like 2 weeks.

I bought some SARs that were really cheap. I usually stay away from the big chases, especially in times like this. I dont often love the main chase cards enough to justify the price. And once you start getting into like $200+ for a brand new card, you really gotta start thinking about opportunity cost imo

I really enjoy modern cards, but I don’t enjoy it enough to pay the current prices. I picked up some SWSH-era SARs recently, but not the most expensive ones. I will happily let everyone focus on modern while I buy PSA 9 old ex cards for orders of magnitude less than new SAR prices.

people only like to talk about the crazy cards for modern, but you can buy most of the special arts for less than $10 each. even some of the nicest ones like the milotic SAR was only $40 and that’s just because i got impatient. it was $30 a couple weeks ago before the recent bounce back

Buying modern graded chase cards feels like a recipe for disaster. Props to those who like to live dangerously

Some of the cosmos holos I want are really cheap, like $3 a card, but the shipping is $25 or more. With different cards in different quantities spread over different sellers, that adds up fast.

I felt comfortable buying the sv8a umbreon ex sar for around $200 when it was avaliable.

I am also buying some other modern (2021/2022) PSA 10s I think are still pretty low (sub $200), but I am also optimistic about their gains this year, especially with the US economy having a bright year ahead.

I was shocked to see some older Sun Moon SR cards fly in price (looking at you mewtube!), I’m definitely not buying those.

if they are overinflated normally u would sell into the hype rather than buy

Well there are quite a few cards that have yet to follow the rise in price.

I took one out of your book and finished my post with a laugh emoji

I think people reason higher prices with English over Japanese because of the harder 10 rate (and maybe harder pull rate?)

Who knows if that is enough to keep Japanese cards lagging behind, or it’s just English cards time in the sun.

I started to buy modern cards in October right before the rise. I stopped when the rise began and many modern cards became too expensive for me regarding what I want in my collection. I mainly bought charizard, pikachu, eeveelitions, and few other nice cards such as tag teams, lugia V, gardevoir ex, mewtwo vstar etc.

I was about to buy mewtube, Mrayquaza etc, but they rose too much for me, and I’m mainly checking cards that didn’t rise much like umbreon/espeon prime, gengar prime, flashfire charizard, Dragon charizard, etc.

If I’m being honest, now really isn’t a good time to be buying anything semi-desirable. The environment feels way too bubbly outside of niche cards or those nobody really wants.

Great time to be a seller if you’ve got some high value cards.

I’ve been debating selling my magikarp & gyarados poncho pikas. For buying them at retail in 2016 it’s so tempting lol, although I have held out this far.
An even 10k CAD would be pretty nice rn.

Try to sell in USD if you can. Much more stable than the Canadian pesos monopoly money Canadian tire money Canadian dollar.
