Magikarpflail’s Shadowless Obsession

Precursor to the badly taken pics of my collection; I got back into collecting Pokémon cards while I was at university (aka broke student), I loved first edition base, but as much as I wanted to buy those cards I couldn’t justify the cost, enter Shadowless! I spent hours/ days/ nights/ weeks/ months researching shadowless cards, and decided to focus on those! I love the odd spot they fill, where they don’t quite belong, and aesthetically I think they look spot on and are so nostalgic!

The first 5 cards I’ll post were opened personally, and so have extra meaning for me.

If anyone is interested my IG handle is mr.spookyspoons, and there are a couple of cringeworthy YouTube videos under Magikarpflail from years ago, where I believe I may have been one of the first collectors to talk about country codes on green wing base set booster boxes

Shadowless are the best man. It’s the one I reminisce about the most, the cards I cherish the most of childhood. I was curious and took a look at the alleged cringey video on youtube, and as it turns out, it was something I instantly recognized… god, from years ago. I had seen your video by chance when looking up clear wrap shadowless boxes. That was quite a surprise.

It was pleasing when I saw it back then, and it was just as pleasant to see it again. I bought my unlimited box around the exact same time, for a little less, and was and still am drooling at the idea that you got one for just a little bit more. I wish I had just spent the extra few hundred at the time to get it. I recall it being about 6-700 usd at the time, vs the 400 for unlimted. Opening shadowless packs as a kid… nothing beat that in the world of pokemon. Nothin’ at all.

Anyway, I expect those beauties are the ones pulled from that box. My, they look fabulous. Venusaur looks so good. I mean damn, they all do!

Thanks man, that means a lot, I’m glad you were able to get some enjoyment from the videos back in the day! It’s always fun revisiting old memories of times like that.

That’s so great, it sounds like you had the peak childhood experience! Money was tight for my parents so I was only able to play with some of my friends dupes, but any of the gen 1 cards bring back a flood of memories!

Do you still have your unlimited box? I know what you mean, it felt expensive back then, hindsight is a wonderful thing!

Edit: just read your thread where you detail opening it with your friend, and having saved 1 pack from it! Sounds like the best of times!

Shadowless is great! Base set is my favorite. Can be any language or rarity I just love that it’s the first set.

I’m currently working on a shadowless holo set in 8/9. I think it’s a bit underrated but it’s a great option if you can’t swing 1st Ed and want something a bit rarer than unlimited.

Got zard a few weeks ago and am after a blastoise at the moment

I agree, base set in all forms is unbeatable! I love seeing the variance between all the prints runs, and the differences in holos between the different language prints too!

How far through your holo set are you?

I’m 2 out of 16 down. Got charizard a few weeks ago and a gyrados I found at a good deal this week so waiting for that in the mail. I’m thinking blastoise then chansey after.

How about you? Are you looking for a holo set or a full set? Do you want to pull them yourself?

Good to get the charizard out of the way for sure! Good luck for the rest of them.

I mainly collect raw, and thankfully I’ve completed the holos, at some point I may try and get another Ninetales so I have two full sets

Shadowless are great! I still feel they’re underrated to some degree. Obviously 1st Edition is king, but I still enjoy the Shadowless binder I built. Sometimes it’s nice to see the cards without the extra stamp. I still prefer the bolder colours over the regular Unlimited print as well. It’s hard to beat that Charizard with the extra green wings.

Unbeatable!

Just watched your video again for the first time in years. It doesn’t matter how many times I see green wing boxes, the reaction is always the same.

Thanks man, it’s funny to me that the guys I’ve been reading from for years on this forum have seen that old video. I mainly keep it now for the sake of provenance :eyes:

Completely agree, whenever anyone posts a green wing box I always take a minute to appreciate it.

Love Shadowless too. Everytime I come across a Shadowless Gyarados for a fair price I get it, not online, but locally. It’s a different experience. I have 110 of them and still not tired.

That must be fun to casually come across them quite often, because I mean, my god man 110 is a lot! Very impressive, it would be very cool to see them all in one place

After purchasing a fair amount of raw singles and bulk shadowless cards, I became interested in sealed product. This was the first booster box I purchased back in 2012, after researching shadowless for a little while, and being aware that green wing charizard boxes had a chance to contain shadowless cards in them. Unfortunately for me, I didn’t realise the subtleties to look out with all the different types of green wing boxes! I was initially a little disappointed, though overall still thought the eye appeal over an unlimited base box was worth it.
