Just as the title states I’m looking for some opinions from some experienced Ebay sellers , specifically from the U.S & Canada. However all responses are welcomed
Just to give you some set and setting; you sell a single card for $250-300 on EBay using a buy it now type add. Buyer pays immediately. You then thank the buyer for their purchase, and the buyer responds with excitement in anticipation for their new card. You then ship the card out 36h after purchase with tracking and insurance. The main question is, how would you answer the email below?
Oh, and your Canadian and the buyer is American in this scenario lol
Not from the US nor Canada, but since you’ve already send the card I see two options:
Stick with your No returns statement you had in the description. The buyer made a mistake, it’s his/her own fault. Not a very friendly or customer supportive option, but you’re in your rights here either way (although eBay/PayPal usually protects buyers more than sellers, so it could be slightly risky since the buyers offered a pretty reasonable solution in the mail of the picture-link).
Let him/her send the card back covering his/her own shipping costs as (s)he suggests. Once the card is safely back in your hands refund him/her the amount (s)he paid (perhaps minus the 15 USD, although I would let the buyer pay that separately him/herself).
Personally I would go with option 2. Either way, since you’ve already send the card, don’t refund any money until you have the card back in your hands. If you would refund now, the buyer could keep the card AND his/her money…
I would just accept the return. The hassle and potential negative isnt worth it.
Make sure the buyer pays return shipping. And if you have any restocking fees you charge, you are allowed to charge it as long as it is stated in your listing.
Im sure your item will sell the next time around!
I accept returns so I’d take the return. Really there’s no reason to not accept returns, you’re powerless under eBay to uphold your no return policy, and you end up with a higher search ranking with it on.
In the end the return is going to happen, at least in the scenario they’re offering you’re not totally out. Up to you if add them to your block list or not. Any return to me gets you put on mine.
I think my one situation was an outlier, but I, as the seller, have successfully refused a return and both eBay and PayPal sided with me. You are not powerless as a seller. You just have to explicitly detail your return policy in your listing.
In my situation, I thoroughly described the item, but the buyer disagreed with condition. I refused a return and both companies sided with me.
It was a unique listing with ridiculously descriptive details, so I think that’s why eBay sided with me, but despite what you hear, eBay doesn’t always side with the buyer.
That said, it was a fuggin hassle pulling teeth, but I prevailed. So i can’t recommend this route necessarily, but it can work.
Bottom line, I’d say OP should accept the return in this instance.
Just accept the return and make sure the item is returned in the EXACT condition it is sent. They dont get the return until you get it back and have had the opportunity to check all the cards. Make it simple for yourself. He also said he would pay to return it which is key.
The answer is always to make things as simple as possible.
Just want to say thanks for all the great opinions! This is why I love this forum
Hope I wasn’t giving off the vibe that I wasn’t going to accept the return. I had already accepted the return request shortly after I had seen the great post and opinion from Quuador.
I generally wanted to use this to see what experienced sellers return policies are in relation to the hobby. I’m rather new to selling higher value collectibles and cards on eBay ($200 +). I thankfully have had plenty of experience with sub $50 orders with well over 200 transactions as a seller, receiving100% positive feedback along the way. Thankfully, in all of those transactions iv never had to issue or ask for a return.
I have always had “No Returns” enabled on my adds as I noticed 90% of the resale market iv seen on eBay have “ No Returns “ also enabled ( pic for example imgur.com/gallery/pmhP2rj )
I figured this was more unique to the collectibles market as item condition can be very important in some cases. However you make a great point Cullers!
I plan on updating my ads with a 30 day return policy today.
Can you guys think of a reason to ever enable “No Returns” on an add?
When you qualify for Top Rated Seller Status (assuming this is your goal), ebay requires free returns with no restocking fee for 30 days - for US Sellers.
