JP Set Schedule & Trademarks

According to Pokébeach, we have the following confirmed dates for sets in 2025:

  • January 24, 2025 - [SV9] Battle Partners
  • March 14, 2025 - [SV9a] Heat Wave Arena
  • April 18, 2025 - [SV10] The Glory of Team Rocket

Here’s the JP set schedule for 2021-2025 thus far. Judging by the timeline, the main takeaways are:

  • Heat Wave Arena should be the subset expansion & sealed battle set SV9a
  • The Glory of Team Rocket should be the main expansion SV10
    • This should correlate to a future main set SV10 for TPCi / English, meaning it will be released with booster boxes (i.e. it’s not a special set like 151)
  • The supposedly BW-themed dual sets Black Bolt & White Flare should also be main expansions, so they may be pushed back to SV11 in July
    • June’s subset expansion (SV10a?) either doesn’t exist or hasn’t had its trademark registered yet

The fact the rocket and the trainer set appear to be one giant set here in English I think is huge!!!

i know i’m in the minority, but i’m not looking forward to this upcoming year of chr/csr style special arts

i’m guessing something will be announced for May/June that hasn’t been revealed yet. maybe a high class deck style product or just another mini set. even if sv10 is late april (likely), it’s hard to imagine that big of a gap until the next set

I agree, there should at least be a subset expansion for June that TPCi can use as their August special set. If it’s SV10a and a subset expansion of SV10 Glory of Team Rocket, they may play around with the Rocket theme (Rocket Elite, Johto) or other villain theme (Ghetsis)

Excited for battle partners and team rocket - especially since they have clear and relatable identities as opposed to “fusion arts” or “super electric breaker”. Idek what those names are supposed to mean

Fusion Arts is about the Fusion Strike mechanic (literally the English set name)
1

Super Electric Breaker is just Stellar Pikachu, they like to make the set name dramatic when it comes to franchise mascots e.g. Ruler of the Black Flame = Dark tera Charizard, Shocking Volt Tackle = Pikachu VMAX

Seeing this schedule makes me think of what will come after SV in 2026. It would be a shame if they did away with the full art cards before getting around to some of my favourites

Two possible timelines for 2025:

1

  • Steven & Marnie decks, Heat Wave Arena and Glory of Team Rocket set combine for EN SV10, following previous years’ mid-year main sets
    • Loss of set identity for Team Rocket
  • Black Bolt & White Flare are half-n-half subset expansions like 151, featuring all 156 Unova Pokémon
    • Ideal for a holiday special set in July
    • BW sets will be available to all players before Worlds
  • Mega Brave and Mega Symphony become SV11

2

  • Steven & Marnie decks and Heat Wave Arena combine to form the holiday special set SV10.5
    • Late release for EN
    • Separation from the Owner’s Pokémon continuity with Journey Together
  • SV10 Team Rocket set maintains a clean set identity at the cost of a smaller set size and fewer chase cards (for EN main set standards)
  • Black Bolt & White Flare are dual sets, which is normal for main expansions
    • EN BW set won’t be available before Worlds i.e. BW set cards won’t be used at Worlds
  • Mega Brave and Mega Symphony become SV12
    • There will be an unusual 4 month gap between SV11 and SV12 with no subset expansion in between (for now)

What do you think?

Option 2 sounds more reasonable, it seems both Heat Wave Arena/Team Rocket have great selection of cards which would make english version almost too stacked.

the issue is it would be too small of a set for typical english main sets imo. i think option 1 is most likely and would follow previous year’s examples. the only way i could see it being a standalone eng set is if jp releases a bunch of decks that end up as filler similar to SV03 and to a lesser degree, SV07

SV era so far:

JP Year 1 ENG JP Year 2 ENG JP Year 3 ENG
sv1S + sv1V SV01 sv5K + sv5M SV05 sv9 SV09
sv1a + sv2D + sv2P SV02 sv5a + sv6 SV06 sv9a + sv10** → ** SV10**
sv2a (151) :arrow_lower_right: SV03* sv6a sv06.5 sv10blackbolt** + sv10whiteflare** (BW ver of 151) → ** sv10.5**
W o r l d s
sv3 (type change tera) :arrow_upper_right: 151 sv7 (stellar tera) SV07 sv11brave** + sv11symphony** (megas) → ** SV11**
sv3a + sv4K + sv4M sv04 sv7a +sv8 SV08 sv11a(?)** + sv12** → ** SV12**
sv4a SV04.5 sv8a SV08.5 sv12a** → ** SV12.5**

* released too late to be legal for worlds
** unconfirmed

  • the only outlier this gen so far is 151 which was switched with SV03 in eng. There are many possibilities for why, but i suspect TPCI felt it would be a better fall release before the holiday shopping period.
Considering we basically have confirmation that jp is doing a BW version of 151, it is possible the 10blackbolt and 10whiteflare could be pushed down to a release after SV11.

English doesn’t care about set identity, so Option 1 is most likely.

I should also mention that TPC tends to make on average 10 JP sets per year (both main expansion and subset expansion)

The current tally of trademarked sets is 7, not including this year’s high class pack; which should mean that Mega Brave and Mega Symphony cannot be the final SV12 expansions of 2025

After the reveal of EN SV10’s set name Destined Rivals, this route is now looking more realistic

  • JP SV12 (October?) and JP SV12a (December?) set trademarks have not been registered yet

Update

  • Black Bolt & White Flare will serve as the final SV era sets
  • Will there be a Best of SV High Class set in the future?

Update

  • SV11B Black Bolt & SV11W White Flare are main expansions despite having the same format as SV2a Pokémon 151 (subset expansion)
    • Probable intent to print this set as much as TPC does for other main expansions
    • This may be the first JP year with 5 main expansions (3 SV and 2 Mega)
  • TPCi appears to convert any set in the June slot into their mid-year special set
  • Inferno X possibly being a Charizard set brings the October slot into question
    • It is May and no other trademark for September/October was announced (usually 6 months prior)
    • Will the sealed battle tournament in September be held for Inferno X instead?
  • May expect another trademark announcement this month, but for the December set
5 Likes

Set date for Inferno X is confirmed September 26

  • This makes it likely to be the set used for sealed battle tournaments in September
  • Potentially a smaller subset expansion coded to M1a
  • Potentially will be combined with October’s M2 for the EN main set typically in November

New trademark “Ninja Spinner”

  • Potential Mega Greninja set mascot
  • Potentially slated for late October / early November
  • Potentially combined with Inferno X for the final EN main set of the year (November?)

Potentially one more set trademark for December

  • Unsure whether it will be a SV-era High Class Pack or a continuation of the Mega sets (M2a enhanced expansion pack)
    • This should be the one that TPCi converts into their annual January special set
  • Speculation that High Class sets ended with Terastal Festival ex
    • Because of how much of each set after is being printed, there might not be a need for EoY reprint sets anymore
    • Biggest factor is SV11B Black Bolt & SV11W White Flare being main expansions, not subset expansions

The next set trademark will be Storm Emeralda
