I have a question, more a discussion or opinions wanted. Maybe I am wrong and all is well, if so I apologize.
While looking at picking up a graded glossy Jiggly I was running into the non-glossy (or though it seemed) with the same PSA label without the Glossy mentioned which seems to be a new cert thing and one of the reasons I ended on an older clean cert but Glossy on label. The troubling part is while looking at a non glossy (my estimation) with the same label as the clearly glossy (but again not mentioned on label) they show the same pop report. Maybe I am wrong and they are all labeled correctly but the colours seemed off on certain one’s. I heard the lighting can impact things but some obvious when side by side, boarder, jiggy, the notes, clouds/tree etc all seemed “light”. Side note even with the Glossy label I still got confirmation card was in fact glossy, I am a bit OCD about being sure lol My personal opinion is the PSA POP report on the glossy jigglypuffs is likely even lower than shown.
Which leads me to my question for discussion, when one looks at the PSA pop report for the glossy (see below) how many are actually the glossy or how should I say, how many are not?
Also I never focused on CGC so could not give an opinion on their ability to be correct, maybe someone has an opinion.
It was a scary search for sure. On some I contacted PSA and asked if they could confirm in some way the fact it was being sold as a glossy yet did not appear to be and was told no way to confirm. I followed up with what they would do if the card was in fact not glossy after purchased (via their vault) and was told we would take care of you. I have no clue what that meant and decided not to risk it. Old but very clean cert, labeled glossy and conformed glossy before purchase, only way I felt comfortable.
you would be sol if u bought a mislabeled one at the wrong price since the psa guarentee doesnt cover mislabel… there are prolly lots of mislabels in the vault like that tmb execcutor
It is a very recent thing that people have started caring about these old japanese promos (including the 1996 pikachu). Do not expect PSA to have shown any consistency in distinguishing between glossy and non-glossy variants over the years. If the non-glossy grades easier while the glossy is the one people want the most, that will cause some issue.
Both variants are not particularly rare and were always dirt cheap if you were not picky about condition. My guess is that the non-glossy versions are a bit more scarce overall.
It’s important to know that there’s only one Jiggly and Pikachu November 96 release (the glossy copies). All the non-glossy ones you see came out at later date and weren’t in a magazine, rather a starter set of sorts.
I believe that is why PSA removed glossy from the label and added November, because there is no non-glossy November release, hence there is no longer any need to distinguish between two variants from November. People are way too uptight about the label update from PSA. It is not worth paying a premium for a glossy label, as any copy that is labeled CoroCoro November is indeed glossy.
You are absolutely correct, in theory that should settle it, says Nov, it’s glossy, no need for glossy label mention. But that is exactly what the issue seems to be, labels stating November (glossy) but awful light coloured looking jigglys .
Media factory released Asobikata magazine in 1996. Volume 1 included the non glossy Pikachu & Jigglypuff. The release date was listed as Nov 1996. Volume 2 was released in 1998 and included Diglett & Dugtrio
PSA has been mislabeling the non-glossy since day 1 and continues to do so, so at the end of the day whether you get the old label that says glossy or the new one that says November, it really doesn’t change a thing. Just make sure that the card inside has deep color saturation, that is a very easy indicator of if it is glossy or not.
I thought the non-glossy was from something called “I learned to play Pokémon”, and was from
some kind of deck? Regardless, it was not released in a corocoro magazine.
Asobikata was the name of the magazine, “I learned to Play” was the marketing theme. Remember this was when they were trying to get traction for Pokémon/Pocket Monsters
Ahhh yes 98 was the lottery glossy which my understanding is they cannot be distinguished from the 96 glossy.
So what we have essentially is a PSA pop report for a glossy card that has non glossy included (small but they are there) and the 98 lottery glossy. So end of day the actual 96 glossy pop report is what 1/2 2/3 of what is shown? I realize the 98 lottery should be scarcer yet if it was able to be distinguished.
