Can someone enlighten me how the ‘remaining time’ on yahoo auctions work? I’ve refreshed the page several times now over the course of 15 minutes or so and the timer goes up and down. It seems every time a new bid comes in, there are more minutes added on top of the ‘remaining time’. Is that correct?
Also, crazy prices indeed. Makes me hopeful that sometime in future other UED e-series sets will appreciate in value too according to their rarity. (I know that they’re not quite as elusive as Expedition of course).
If a bid is made in the last 5 minutes, 5 more minutes are added. So no sniping on Yahoo Japan.
But W T F… 2.5k USD for an unlimited edition Clefairy. I’m getting more and more jealous of my friend who bought the Pikachu for 4 USD a few years back…
@pichufan Yeah, I’m also confused about it. Especially since both the Clefairy and Pichu ended at the exact same price of 267,000 JapYen from the same seller. Might be hugely shill-bid by someone who has a bunch of these. Then again, maybe someone is trying to complete an unlimited edition set (good luck with that with these kind of prices…).
The Pichu is what mostly surprises me, considering you own three and seen a few more, so it’s not like it’s the first time one pops up and another Pichu collector has been on the lookout for one for years.
It would be awesome to know, I want to make a WTB thread but I really have no idea what is a fair asking price for anybody who has these cards, My high bid was $350 on clefairy and that was a joke compared to the selling price if its legit haha. I am so curious so understand more about where these cards came from and if more will suddenly appear now because of this or not.
Yeah the two PSA 10s are owned by members here. One of them used to be up on eBay a couple of years back with a $2k asking price but didn’t sell. I’m really hoping the one I have with PSA comes back a 10.
The best way to get these is to find them in bulk listings from sellers who have no idea that they’re any rarer than the 1st edition versions. I’m sure with more sales like we saw yesterday that’ll start to change, but until then the vast majority of sellers have no idea of their value.
This is how my most recent copy was sold. I picked the whole lot up for 2,400 JPY ($22):
I was expecting it to be in pretty bad condition but I think it has a real good shot at a 10 (the white marks are on the sleeve, not the card):
A new very beat up Pichu has appeared on YJA this morning: page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/f434759383. I’m currently the high bidder at 11 JPY. A similar condition one sold on Mercari a couple of months back for 15,999 JPY, so it will be interesting to see if this reaches a similar value.
Before the recent Pichu and Clefairy sale I was going to reply to this thread with counts of each unlimited card I’m aware to exist, but unfortunately my dog had to have an emergency operation so I didn’t have the time. I do now have some time, so here are some additional numbers to go alongside my post about cards we’ve seen so far. This is entirely based on comments in this thread, PSA figures (which may be inaccurate), choco7maron’s blog and sales I’ve seen in the past year (do bear in mind though that I mostly only search for Pichu, so will have likely missed some listings).
(Updated 3rd July 2020)
002/029 Bulbasaur - 2
005/029 Chikorita - 8
009/029 Charmander - 1
010/029 Charmander - 3
011/029 Charmeleon - 5
013/029 Cyndaquil - 5
016/029 Typhlosion - 2
022/029 Totodile - 3
023/029 Croconaw - 2
024/029 Feraligatr - 4
016/128 Pikachu - 4
028/128 Clefairy - 5
029/128 Meowth - 3
079/128 Charizard - 10
082/128 Pichu - 16
There’s a good chance some of these may be duplicates. Furthermore the vast majority of these cards belong to E4 members who have posted about them in this thread, meaning there will be a lot more out there in the wild that aren’t noted here.
There are also 2 cards mentioned in this thread which were taken from text in choco7maron’s blog posts. I do not believe these cards to exist, rather I believe choco7maron just made a typo with the card numbers. These cards are both mentioned in @unlimited_spaghetti’s first post here: 086/128 Mewtwo and 078/128 Cloyster.
If anyone knows of any I’ve missed please do let me know!
Edit: Just found out the seller who sold 2 Chikorita’s on Mercari a few months back has yet another Chikorita for sale with a very inflated price tag: www.mercari.com/jp/items/m74868281241. Very strange that they’d have 3 Chikoritas. I’ve upped the count above. Use some caution when dealing with this seller, they try to scam people by posting pictures of E1 cards cropped just above where the 1st Edition symbol would be.
So I went through some bulk that I had and found a Charmeleon.
However, an ebay listing that was just advertised as some cards from a starter deck had a Chikorita, Croconaw, and Feraligatr… it sold for the huge price of $0.99.
Alongside the three unlimited cards were 5 1ED trainers and one 1ED Charmeleon. I suppose there’s no guarantee that those cards all came from the same box, but it seems likely?
There are several sales of a ponyta on mercari as well, but I don’t see those on the list. It seems the ponyta is significantly less expensive, is there a reason for that?
Sorry in advance to go complete off-topic for a moment, but:
Things like that Ponyta is what makes it so hard to find certain information, since Pokémon releases can be very inconsistent…
To give a few other examples of inconsistent releases:
The Japanese Pryce’s Lapras is a similar example as the Ponyta. The Pokémon VS set was only released as 1st edition, but this Lapras is available as unlimited edition in the Pokémon Card Information vol. 3 magazine (which was actually released a month before the Pokémon VS set came out). (I wonder if the unlimited L1 starters have a similar loose release?)
The English Secret Wonders Reverse Holo versions for the Breloom, Flaaffy, Quagsire, Bulbasaur, Carvanha, charmander, Shellos east sea, Shellow west sea, and Squirtle cannot be pulled from packs in the actual set, but were released separately as blister promos.
And when we add all languages into the mix, things can become really confusing sometimes:
The WotC #4 Pikachu promo was released in Dutch, but the other WB promos #2 Electabuzz, #3 Mewtwo, and #5 Dragonite were not. This one can be explained, although in general it’s still confusing. The reason why the Pikachu was released in Dutch and the other WB promos not most likely has to do with the Pikachu World Collection 2000, which contained a #4 WotC promo in Dutch with the stamp. So they probably also released it without stamp, since they were already printing it anyways. (A similar thing can be said about the other Pikachu World Collection 2000 languages, with the exception of the Chinese Jungle Pikachu, and a non-holo version of the English Birthday Pikachu promo.)
The EX Legend Maker set is released in English, German, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Chinese. But the Portuguese and Chinese sets both lack the Secret Rare Pikachu.
The Mysterious Treasures set was released in Spanish, but didn’t contain any Reverse Holos. There are quite a few Spanish sets that lacked Reverse Holos tbh, and the entire XY era also lacked Portuguese Reverse Holos. But, the Mysterious Treasures and Majestic Dawn Burger King Reverse Holos (with DIAMOND & PEARL and PLATINUM stamps respectively) were both available in Spanish, printed in Argentina (even though the Majestic Dawn set itself was never released in Spanish).
And I could probably name hundreds of similar examples. Just today I learned about a new one from Eric’s collection thread: the Spanish SH Secret Rares are Holofoil instead of Reverse Holo like the English, German, French, and Italian versions.
Ah well, it can be frustrating at times, but it also kinda makes it interesting to go after all variations in all languages of a certain Pokémon, especially a popular one like Pikachu.
Anyway, sorry about going completely off-topic. Just thought I’d give a bit of background why finding information for certain releases in the Pokémon TCG can be so difficult to track down and get facts/evidence for, since there are so many possible ways a certain card could have been released as, somewhere in the (distant) past. And in a lot of those cases, there isn’t much to go on.
Looks like that same seller is posting more with pretty crazy prices but also they aren’t as much as the last ones bidding prices which seems a little weird? Here is a meowth they posted buyee.jp/item/yahoo/auction/k476292507
I swear I remember seeing unlimited booster packs of E1 in the past and I regret not buying them. Not because of these prices but because I have all the 1st edition E packs and was going to go after the unlimited of each until I realized I made a big mistake not grabbing those when I saw them :c
