welcome @Spyder . I would just echo the sentiment to collect what you like. @DYL added some great links . when i fist started with Japanese cards I went with those that appealed to me. I eventually ended up pursuing some artist collections, to go with my Japanese promos. I definitely the more open you, the more possibilities to discover new things that really give you satisfaction.

You’ve already gotten some good advice. I’ll add that every time you buy a single as an investment, that’s one more card taken off the market, made unavailable to collectors. Every time you win an auction you might have beaten someone who would have really loved to have it. If you buy the cards you want, you don’t have to deal with the moral question of making cards more inaccessible for other people in the community to make a buck.
Also… the best time to invest in singles would have been before they suddenly ballooned in value across the board, not after. Shifting wealth into singles now is very risky. I still do it with the hope my cards hold their value, but if they don’t it’s fine because they’re not investments.

Thanks everyone who replied. This post helps me the most as I wondering if singles had ballooned or not as I had been pretty busy the last few years during covid doing other stuff like meeting japanese singles. Baha, but seriously. I will have to look into some rarer cards and perhaps maybe some 8-9’s in those PSA’d with low pop.
It is now 2:30 pm PST an I just finished taking a bath and am accompanied in my mothers’ basement by my special cup of hot chocolate… I can’t help but to feel as if I was born for this moment. If you have read this far, I am far gone by now… For the 4,000 dollars in this upcoming years budget is all going towards the best quality japanese base set charizards’. By no means do I like to live like this, but I must suffer for 1 final year before Pokemon’s 30th anniversary comes along in the year 2026. I have it all mapped out in my head. It’s clear, like a frozen lake that you can easily fall into because only the top of the lake is frozen and not the entire thing. This upcoming year starting in February I will be giving all of my extra money into this japanese lizardo. Like a leonardo he shall foretell my fortune. Or I shall terribly, terribly, be lost in space. I will be happy with 1 page of him. But 2 will be cutting it close. He must be near pristine, for I fiend, his scaley evanescence. 1 for the money, 2 for the show, 3 for the truffle shuffle, boy let’s go!

Technically, just hot chocolate “swiss mix” and water. The cup was special itself, a holiday cup
