check out the alolan friends promo…crazy
I read all the comments, I’m 34 years old and I’ve been in the hobby since the beginning.
I don’t remember anything of this magnitude (maybe COVID) and it manages to confuse a lot of people.
Whenever there is the discussion about sealed products VS graded cards (from the same box), I always favor a sealed boxes, because one bird in the hand is better than two on the tree.
But now with that price difference, it’s more like one bird in the hand or 10 on the tree.
I specifically came across the “Limited Collection Master Battle Set”
and the alola friends promo
It just makes no sense at all.
I know not all sales are real, but the situation is similar at PWCC as well
Interesting! I still send to PSA USA even though I’m in Japan but this is a really good point. I’d assume a massive influx of currently popular cards flooding the market since (although stereotyping), Japanese people are likely to only want to send to the JP branch of PSA and their submissions are incredibly infrequent.
What’s your experience with submitting to PSA USA from Japan like?
I’m getting bored of refreshing the PSA Japan site to see when the next submission is announced…
I sent 600 cards about 5 years ago, great service, and no import tax. I sent my first shipment since about a month ago, they received it no issue but are still processing. Will see how it changes!
This might have something to do with card condition. The alola friends card has major surface issues. Even my PSA 9 copy you can see the fireworks texture through the back of the card. Which on some days could probably be seen as a PSA 6.
I assume buyers expect a PSA 10 or BGS 10 to have a perfect surface.
Japanese cards are currently pumped by lotteries in Japan which use them as lottery prizes. This is exposed by a video shared by a forumer moshi here. Go to youtube and search for the video titled “The truth behind the Japanese pokemon cards hype” to know more.
The market is bigger than you and I. It doesn’t care about anybody’s opinions.
Personally i wish it really were a bubble, meaning it could burst at any moment. Then maybe i could start collecting again for cheap.
Might as well throw my own comment out the door after reading all that lottery-related hype on another thread.
I haven’t been paying much attention, but the price spike lately has been crazy. My Erika card I got for maybe $50 in the past few years has jumped considerably:
Lots of other Dream League cards have also climbed and others within the S&M era sets. I was really hoping to collect more of these, but I guess I missed the boat. For now I’m sticking with vintage because there’s still a lot of bearish attitude towards it in comparison it seems (at least price wise).
So is this only happening to S&M plus Waifu cards? Or will it eventually trickle down to other cards like the rainbow Reshiram & Charizard?
That’s definitely where I’ve seen the biggest price jumps, anywhere from 5-10x or more compared to what I saw them for just in the past year or so. Assuming those Erika cards in my pic are confirmed sales, thats a 20x increase from what I paid for it. For non-waifu, I’ve seen some go 2-3x more at least. Guessing most of it is that people want to complete the whole set, and so the added demand naturally is driving the prices up of all the cards it seems.
Waifu cards, but also Tag Team alt arts. Basically all of the pretty artworks with some kind of rarity.
Others are also rising, but rainbow cards simply aren’t very in-demand for a good reason. Of course the really popular Pokémon will also sell in CG/rainbow variants (see Shining Umbreon GX), but rainbow Marnie isn’t even 1/5 of the price of a “real” Marnie, so I doubt they’ll stonk that hard.
Second this. What’s more, most of us including me are just ordinary folks, not youtuber or influencer. Previously I was accused of hypeing a certain card whenever I talked about it in another group. I even got accusations and provokings after I stopped talking about it. It got so bad I had to leave the group. Man.
Update: after selling a bunch of cards that I would categorize as “common” at prices that I would classify as “obscene”, I’m now firmly comfortable semantically calling this a “bubble”. Thank you.
My guess is that prices will come down at some point. Some of these cards have basically increased at a 90 degree angle, and it’s really only certain cards: Waifus, SM Alt Arts, CHRs with Waifus in them and Eevee Heroes.
Not saying they’ll drop to the same prices they were before the increase, but this has late 2020/early 2021 English written all over it. Things will likely settle.
Good points. It definitely seems a bit irrational considering the rest of the market is relatively quiet/tame. Part of the reason I never bought some of them sooner is because of the relatively high PSA 10 pops on most of the cards (some in the 1000s). So I kind of assumed the prices would take a while to climb and the supply would be fairly available for years to come.
Anyway, I think you’re right. Definitely seems like a correction will be due at some point in the future.
When the first thread about this topic was posted I voted Disagree. When this thread was posted I initially voted Neutral. Now that I have been selling off my Dream League cards I really have to Agree.
Probably sold four or five of these Vileplume around $40 each over the past few years. Then sold the last one I have for $300. Luckily I kept my CHRs because I always thought they were too cheap.
These sales were only 47 days apart. If the daily rate of increase stays the same, then the person I sold it to will be a billionaire in less than one year.
