Compared to neo series shinings and gold stars these cards seem to be very undervalued. While they are a few years newer than gold stars they have even lower psa populations. Under 30 psa 10s on all of them! They also feature the most popular legendaries from gen 2-4 but just because it’s not a umbreon or a charizard people don’t care about them these days. Not my picture here but I’m considering collecting these cards.
I really don’t like the call of legend cards. To me there’s definitely no match with gold stars :
Call of legend look like bad video game screenshots.
A few quick thoughts:
-
Worth less ≠ undervalued. Personally, I think there are pretty good reasons why the CoL shinies are worth less than gold stars.
-
Comparing the pop reports is going to be very misleading bc there’s a much higher incentive to grade gold stars and people have been grading them for much longer than the CoL shinies.
-
EX Series is much more firmly established as desirable + collectible. It’s not yet clear what the demand will be for CoL. Right now, CoL is kind of part of that awkward mid-era–not quite modern, not quite vintage. Basically, how people used to view EX. But EX has increasingly become viewed as part of the early TCG, but CoL isn’t there yet. So it’s more unpredictable IMO.
@ddk I wasn’t kidding. D&P shinies are next. Stock up.
If it’s a shiny new toy (literally) it brings people in these days
I think Call of Legends cards (assuming you’re just referring to the shiny legends and not the entire set) are already valued fairly and well-established. Like many other secret rare cards featuring shiny Pokemon, they’ve seen a large bump during this boom. The 10s are seeing sales on par or above with Shinings and Crystals, which were already seen as top tier set chase cards.
Do they have room to grow? Absolutely. Will they ever be on par with Gold Star cards? Doubtful, but stranger things have happened this year.
Now the more pressing question is, how leveraged is the OP on Call of Legends cards before they decided to make this thread?
Only exception is the Suicune, the COL version looks so much better imo with the holo foiling.
It’s just my opinion, but they look really hideous to me. The art isn’t very interesting and lacks originality. If they were released today, they’d be just like basic holos, and no one would care about them. I mean.. ray looks like a weird worm
If I was going to buy this artwork, I would probably go with the legendary present campaign on the Japanese side.
Haha. Talking from an investment point of view it’s very clear that PSA 9 gold stars will eventually reach $15k-$20k in the next few years. Given that, most people are gonna be out priced then look for the next big thing. With low pops and the first appearances of a few legendaries like Lugia/Ho-Oh then it’s clear that COL will eventually reach very high prices. I would argue that the artwork is better than some gold stars
Not if we all stonk off our modern amiright?!
All valid points. But I remember 1 year ago no one was really talking about gold stars but instead chasing modern instead. Given that COL cards have so much foil they’re harder to grade than GS imo, it was a short printed set that is limited to one specific set instead of the whole of the EX-Nintendo print run. I think people underestimate how hard it is to find mint copies of COL today, it’s very easy and quick for sentiment to shift for a set of cards and when they do it’s gonna rocket
Suicune is gorgeous in person the rest I agree are pretty damn ugly
I agree that the Suicune from call of legends is absolutely stunning, especially with the added holographic border.
Gold Stars have always been god-tier. Everyone remembers the $40–50k Torchic that sold a few years ago. A big difference is that they weren’t limited to a single set, they spanned an entire generation and were the chase cards in every set from 2004 to 2007. Call of Legends is just one set among many. Just because they’re shiny doesn’t mean they’re comparable..
I agree that COL will never match GS in price, but from an investment point of view I think they are a good bet.
Valid points. But I would argue they are more similar than different and will become the new ‘silver stars’ in the next few years. They just feel too cheap right now for the amount of good things they have
I don’t think this is a sudden revelation. Call of Legends shinies have been well-regarded for a while now. They’re a cool subset and I don’t doubt they will increase in the future if held long-term.
A word of caution though: these cards, like many others in this market, are selling for all-time highs and you may find yourself sitting with one for a while if you buy now and there is a correction. If you are okay paying the current prices and genuinely love these cards, then go for it! But comparing them to Gold Stars and convincing yourself they will see a similar pattern of growth (nothing goes up in a straight line forever, despite what the current market is indicating) is just setting yourself up for disappointment.
@Wishingstar981 appreciate this discussion! I will preface this with the statement that neither of my balls are crystal, so who knows what’ll happen.
I get the feeling from your responses you want to think these are a good investment, and are looking for the next things to pop.
The danger in doing that during a boom is that you’re comparing against record demand. Old heads can correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think there have ever been more dollars in the hobby. It is very likely that demand is going to recede to some extent, and prices with them. That may not be the case for everything, and when it does happen it’ll be at varying levels. But as prices do drop, more desirable cards like 1st ed base, shinings, gold stars, and others may become accessible again at these price points. Heck, even with all of this demand, I think a PSA 9 CoL Suicine is still cheaper today than it was in 2021 or so.
All that to say, I recommend speculating in cards you’d enjoy anyways even if they drop in value 50%+. Then you still have nice shiny cardboard to look at. This market feels like a massive game of hot potato, and it can’t go on forever imo.
Thanks for the advice mate. Agree with everything. I genuinely love COL cards they are the pride and joy of my collection, really make me happy just like GS (Which I got priced out of). A lot of people here have said they’re ugly but I think if they had a good look in person they will grow on you. They have that mid-era HGSS vibe that I think will do well long term.
Few of my favourites:
Lugia
Suicune
