. Not trying to be “offensive” just wanted to see what others thought. I have my own opinions and I’m not looking for someone to tell me what to do, just interested in discussion from others who have more experience collecting.
I would not be here discussing children’s cardboard if I did not have a passion for it and love it since I was a kid. Certain Collectibles have value to me which is why I collect them, however the speculative growth of those collectibles interests me as well. Who even knows if I’d I would sell something that went up in price a whole bunch somewhere down the line. Chances are I may not need that money and I’d prefer to hold something for sentimental reasons. Just wanted to see what others thought of the long term outlook of these sets, as I really love them both.
Then just watch Smpratte’s YouTube videos. They’re great and very informative. And it’ll go over a lot better than entering the forum and right off the bat (BANG!) asking about how to “invest” in Pokémon.
Thanks! Yeah I started watching his videos and it got me interested in the community here.
I appreciate the contributions and understand how this was a “meme” question though I didn’t intend to be that guy
I just love pokemon and was curious about which set people like collecting more
And maybe I misused the word but if I wanted to truly “invest” my money I probably wouldn’t pick Pokémon, personally. I just like the hobby and want to buy and hold onto some things that I love. Which regardless of how you look at it, by purchasing a collectible you are kinda taking a position on it.
I don’t understand all the other smart people trying to outsmart my bro. In my opinion Pokémon cards in general is a very bad way to invest. It’s more like a type of collection and some people have same type of interest. Also just don’t take those YouTube videos seriously, most of them are hyping. if not, trying to hype in the future. Take care and stay safe.
To be fair I said “interested in starting to collect seriously”
I would not consider myself a “serious” collector now despite buying occasional singles/sealed product over the years.
I appreciate your comment though, I do like the “buy what you like” mentality because after all the support and growth of the hobby has come from personal interest and I do feel that way. In this case I like both sets quite a bit and will probably buy a good bit of both
Yes I love Pokémon, no I’m not here just trying to flip cards I think I mentioned in other comments but I’m looking to buy and hold things that I like for a long time if not forever
I think I should have phrased it as “which set do you like best” as this is basically what I was looking for. I just wanted to see what other people thought of these sets on a personal level not “which one will print me free money” so I’m bummed that it came off this way, not my intention. I was just interested to see what other, probably more experienced, collectors thought of the sets. Sorry for the noob/meme post and thanks for your reply
Hey OP! I too just joined recently, and was considering what to “invest” in. I’m selling off all my old Yugioh cards and was planning on buying up a lot of HF tins when they’re re-released and sit on them until they jump back up to the prices they’re at today. My problem is that I’m still very new to serious collecting, (I actually just ordered my first PSA graded card from eBay a few days ago) and that we shouldn’t be thinking about what’s going to be making us money in the future because that’s investing not collecting. I decided that with the money I make selling my Yugioh cards I would rather buy cards that I loved when I was a kid that I can look at everyday to get my daily dose of nostalgia versus sealed tins that I hope make me money in 10 years. I’m still going to buy a few HF tins but I’m going to open them because at the end of they day that’s more fun and I might pull a couple cards to add to my collection.
OPPPPPPPP I think you are taking the criticism well. These types of threads have been happening more and more and tend to very often get memed at because of the nature of the question. My advice is to not leave like many often do when joining and this happening, but take the criticism and start your research! Personally “buy what you like” was revolutionary to me when beginning. It allows you to research for the purpose of joy and excitement for the hobby and honestly it truly leads to the organic advance of knowledge and efficiently buying/selling cards. The best way to learn how to efficiently buy/sell and be knowledgeable about pokemon cards, is to pursue it through research by genuine interest in what you like. And then the knowledge and abilities follow organically!
released 2016- cheapest pack price on ebay: $4.50
Hidden Fates- released 2019- cheapest pack price on ebay: $9.49
The numbers don’t lie. I paid about $5.50 a pack for Hidden Fates a couple months ago, I could already easily make profit on it despite what naysayers on here think. Any future value is highly dependent on how much more Pokemon is going to print and we’re on the cusp of another wave for HF. That’s the inherent risk in putting any money into modern. So far Pokemon has been pretty reserved about how much HF is being produced and the demand hasn’t been satisfied since the set released. If we assume they don’t continue to print the set into oblivion [like they did with evolutions], I’d say HF is a no-brainer
Thanks! I think it is important in life to be open to a different perspective or to being wrong and I know there are people way more knowledgeable than me here so I’m just trying to be humble and listen to what everyone has to say.
