Inflation of PSA 9 gold stars?

Hey!

I´m still wondering how inflated the numbers are on these cards, especially the zard. I know at least of two people who resubmit their 9s to get 10s but won´t send the labels back because they think it will lower the chance of them getting a 10 (obv pretty ridicolous imo). Do you think that is common practice/do you know of other people doing this? What is your estimate on the number of “real” PSA 9? Really interested in hearing your opinions.

They can always send in their labels anonymously AFTER they get the cards back which would help in the integrity of the pop report.

Hard to say. Many people who repeatedly resubmit the same card likely aren’t telling anyone. I just can’t think of a way to measure it.

True! It´s in no way possible to (exactly) measure the amount of people resubmitting but the interesting thing would be to know if you know of people doing this and how they go about sending their labels back in. I guess more like a survey

You should name and shame the resubmitters imo. Resubmitting should only be done if a grade is a mistake not for financial gain. Personally if i bought a 10 and found out it was a 9 submitted 4 times beforehand i would be pissed.

They come to my lgs from time to time, always bringing really nice pokemon stuff (which they try to trade/sell), I just know their real names and have no clue what their internet presence is like. I don´t know if I should disclose their names publically though.

I agree, but I think we all either know of or have been on the end of submitting 50 cards, all of which are 10-worthy, and getting back what appear to be 10% randomly-dispersed 9s.

Especially on lower-value cards, I have lots of success with cracking and resubmitting what I see as arbitrarily low grades and scoring 10s on them. That being said, there is a line between doing it for a second opinion and maliciously doing it repeatedly in order to hope to hit that top end of the bell curve and catch a favorable grader. This is where integrity and knowledge of sellers comes in, and why if I was ever buying a very high-end PSA card, I would pay more to buy it from a seller I know is reputable.

Shouldn’t the most important aspect of the card, be the condition itself? I would think it makes no difference, if I get a weak 10 on the first try, or an equally weak 10 that someone else resubmitted multiple times.

I think it pretty much comes down to, if you had a choice between buying from a cracker or someone who doesn’t crack…who would you pick? Plus, if you had a choice between a first time graded PSA 10 or one a cracker cracked open and resubmitted…who would you buy from?

I think you guys are both making sense and what @pieterpie is stressing is the age old “buy the card, not the grade”.

I have examples of PSA 9/ PSA10 cards that I could put side by side and hide the grades. I could set up a situation where you’d offer more “buying the card” for the 9 than the 10 because some of my single submitted 9’s look better than some of my single submitted 10’s. If I cracked both cards the 9 and the 10 and sent them back to PSA I’d give them both a 50/50 shot at a 10 and even if the 9 was cracked and regraded to a 10 it’s second try it would still be a stronger 10 than the first.

I mean even @funmonkey54 cracks some of his cards that submit to the “9 tax” and get 10’s the second time around. Even though they were cracked I bet they are indistinguishable from the first pass 10’s most of the time. I don’t think it can get much more honest or trustworthy than Charlie.

TLDR: If you buy the card and not the grade then you should have no issue buying from crackers. If you are happy with the card that is all that matters.
