If you can't buy 'em, win 'em (UPDATE : HR Mewtwo!)

Hi everyone,

I don’t get to post many collections updates as budget’s a bit tight lately. But one of the great things about being in Japan is that you don’t even need money to get trophy cards ; sometimes you can just win one!
Look at this cool guy I just got :

As most Japanese collectors probably know, the Mewtwo HR Competition (ミュウツーHR争奪戦) tournaments series has just started. That’s the one where you participate in a sealed tournament and the top 25% players get the Promo Full Art version of Mewtwo GX (aka SR version, pictured here), while 1st place also grabs the Rainbow Rare (HR) version.
(Just to give you an idea of how premium these events are: due to server overload, it took me the best of 3 hours refreshing the admission page just to grab a spot the one day entry was possible)

Only 300 copies of the HR version will ever exist, while the SR version will have at most 2400 copies distributed.
(Despite the fact that getting a place in one of the events was already a challenge in itself, we had a few no-shows today. As there’s supposed to be a SR Mewtwo for one out of four players, two copies were sent back to TPC. So we can tell that there actually won’t be 2400 copies distributed. )

Anyway, I got up to top 4 and grabbed me a SR copy!
I see ungraded SR copies going for 35.000~50.000yen on Mercari right now, and I’m curious to see how the trend will evolve.
(I try not to think too hard about the fact I was also two wins away from a X000$ card )

Now that we have PSA in Japan, I’m considering making this my first submission! Plus, the tournament organiser was kind enough to let me check the two extra copies before they were sent back, and let me switch mine with the best-looking one ; so I’m pretty confident in its Gem Mint 10 Potential!

How do you all feel about this card? Is there interest for it outside of Japan too?
Also, if you have any questions about the card’s distribution, ask ahead and I’ll try to answer as best I can.

** Aug 7 Update **

Well guess what, I managed to get in another Mewtwo HR Competition and this time I somehow rose all the way up to first place. Which means that Mewtwo from last time now has a twin and a big bro!

The Rainbow Rare (HR) Mewtwo has quite an aura to it. I put it in a sleeve and toploader the second I got it, and I dare not take it out :stuck_out_tongue:

As I explained last time, that’s a 300-copies only card, exclusively handed out to the winners of extremely popular (wonder why) sealed tournaments.
I was very lucky to get in this time (I was on a waiting list, and only a fourth of attendees got in that day), but when I opened my sealed packs and saw that I had pulled none of the “power cards” of the set (Charizard GX, etc.) I thought that was as far as my luck was going to go that day. Turns out I had some more luck (and prior practice!) in stock to take me there

I wouldn’t sell my other Trophy card, but seeing the ridiculous price at which this card still sells for I’m wondering if selling wouldn’t be the right choice here.
I’m quite proud of the feat this card represents, but it could also help fuel the other collection goals I’ve had for a while now…

What would you lovely people do?

That is an awesome card and congratulations on winning it!
I recently obtained my own copy via a friend in Osaka, it is definitely interesting how the price/market reacts in the coming weeks; as you mentioned that the competitions have just begun, hence more copies will be available in due time.

As for me, im not holding my breath. I really like the artwork on this card, and im comfortable with what i paid; if anything, i do hope this drops in price so i can get another copy or two.

I wish you best of luck in future competitions, hopefully you will win and get the rainbow version.

Best regards.

Thanks!
You wasted no time getting your own copy, hey? Can I ask how much you paid for it?

Thanks!

Here’s how the drawing went : before oppening your packs, your were seated at random in front of another player. Both players opened half the packs from a Remix Bout booster box (that’s 15 five-cards packs each) and you wrote down what you drew on a set checklist. Then you’d pass your cards and checklist to the other player and have them double-check them. If everything checked out, they would sign your list. Of course, you’d check theirs too.

In addition to the Erika participation prize and 15 of each basic energy type, those would be your card pool for the whole event.
So long as you stuck to your card pool and built a 40 cards deck, you could change the contents of your deck between rounds.

Games were played with 40-cards decks and 4 prizes. There would be 2 or 3 swiss rounds of qualifiers (the winner of each swiss group got a SR Mewtwo), then a single elimination tournament with 3 more rounds for the HR Mewtwo.

Finally, the 300 events are spread over July and August all around Japan, with several occurring on the same day.

Congratulations, that’s quite the achievement!
I think I would keep it; The story of attaining it that goes with it makes it even more valuable for you and I think you would regret it if you sold it and you realize that getting that specific card back is going to be almost impossible.

P.s. Love your background.

Unless your struggling, keep it. The price will rise:)

Hi! Sorry for the very late reply, I’m not on the internet too much.
I paid 500+ USD for mine, now i think they are available for around 200+.
Congratulations on your first place finish! The HR variant looks really awesome.
If it were mine, I would hold on to it for possible future grading (for keeps).
Cheers!

Awesome story man. I think it’s even more rewarding to win such amazing cards instead of just buying them. Congrats man.
