This quote from the Not a Fan of Pokemon Prototypes thread nicely articulates how I feel about the prototypes and it gave me the idea to create a price poll.
How much would you be willing to spend for a prototype of your favourite species?

How much would you be willing to spend for any prototype card?
If I can find a Pikachu prototype for <5k, I’d get it. Unfortunately, they’re all 15-30k thus far…
And although I’ve been looking to buy just a Japanese 1995/1996 prototype card for the fun of it, I would spend <1k for it, and most unpopular ones seem to end at around 1.5-3k thus far.
Prototypes feel like spongebob in sandy’s dome without water Keep telling myself “I don’t need it”. Would like to pick one up but if it never happens, that’s okay too!
For me personally, you’re buying into the promise that these cards are the real prototypes, but there is no evidence that 100% confirms it. My buy-in would be at $500-1000 just to own 1 and if I lose it, I wouldn’t care that much, but my risk tolerance would not handle this type of purchase at higher price ranges.
I was going to say $500 or under for any prototype just to say ive got one but then i remembered that ive spent between $100-$2000 for demo or prototype decks and since those are my favorite equivalent, i guess that is probably my max.
I’m only interested in buying one and I’d be willing to pay up to $3000 which I think is a lot for something like this. In which case, I’d only buy a copy of a species I really like with art I personally enjoy. So I’d never get something like Rattata or Jynx just for the sake of owning a playtest card.
I’m not sure that I would want to spend over $5,000, even for my favorite Pokemon. For an average prototype, I think $1,000-$2,000 is a good price point.
A prototype has no place in my collection. In fact I anti-want them. The cynical nature around every step of these coming to sale makes me feel like everything about them is gross and ruined. And especially toxic would be the ones cut from uncut sheets for the purpose of increasing potential profits. I do not condone the defacing or destruction of historical objects.
