How much of your monthly income goes into the hobby?

It really depends. I’d say on average $200-$300 a month, but at times I’ve spent way more than this or none at all. I really prefer taking my time winning auctions compared to buy it now, unless I can get a good BIN price compared to previous auction sales of a card I’m after.

Even though I don’t focus much on modern, I usually will buy at least 1 booster box of a new set to either open or store away, especially if it has cards in it I like. Otherwise, I’ll just pick up the singles at some point. My game store I buy from has a loyalty program, so between that and my credit card cash back I always get modern boxes 5-7% below MRSP, which is nice.

I pretty much spend money on Pokemon and suffer. Im a student so i dont have a ton of money anyway. My mattress is just chilling on the floor but a bed frame doesnt bring me joy the way shiny cardboard does. If only i could build a bedframe out of bulk

Buy enough ETB’s and stack them and voila, bed frame.

Cheers!

As a pokemon dentist, a rare specialty indeed, I make 100k a month.

12k a month goes to pokemon investing.

lol jk

After student loans and helping my family there ain’t many slices of pizza left. I’m actually waiting for SMpratte to one day offer that $20 patreon deal again as I missed out on the previous promo. So to say I’m frugal is an understatement. I do follow what Scott says, collect what you like. If I really like something I’ll plan on buying it. Might be in a month, might be in a year. There is no rush for me. Probably average $200 a month over the years.

I base my meals off of how much I’ve spent on pokemon that week.
Big spending week = Mr. Noodles

Does it count if I tell myself not to buy cards but still buy cards?

Nope. It also doesn’t count if the expensive card you just bought is “the last one for a while.”

I do not have a monthly split but always a good amount of capital ready for some valuable cards even though the more valuable cards are already far beyond my “good amount of capital” But never give up

I’ve never understood how kit builders and Gunpla builders can store all their backlog, but I completely understand why they have one. haha (thankfully, I’m more addicted to cardboard.)

edit: OCD grammar

@AULO_hOf , To answer your question, look at it THIS way:
If you break down your monthly budget (projected, not actual), be sure to include an amount for this hobby (or each if you also laughed hard at the meme above.) Then see if that amount matches your spending in this hobby, and voila’! I will say this: I also live frugally (poor kid syndrome) and I also feel like I spend a lot on cards… sometimes I do.
But, I like to keep around 2 months of income in the bank, and have easily liquidatable assets for about 6. That is MY formula, but it saved my ass during covid, so I know it kinda works. I’m not a finance professional. You should determine what is right for you, and this in no way establishes a customer-client relationship.

This is what I did, I opened the thread out of curiosity. I’m currently putting aside about 8% of my income towards the hobby, while I have 3 months of expenses in an instant access saving account and other assets that I can liquidate if things get really terrible

I fully believe in the ‘pay yourself first’ finance model, therefore I buy all the cards I want and struggle to pay my bills with whatever remains :+1:

I’ve actually paid friends with graded cards before. (not actually.)
