I am looking to buy a card but the pictures are very low quality. I can see that there is no major whitening or large creases but beyond that nothing can be made out there could still be a lot of minor whitening and scratches and small creases etc.
I assume going for a card like this is just a gamble but I would like to hear your thoughts on what you do in situations like these
I have - many times I usually don’t say ‘Can you take some pictures that aren’t blurry?’ because that implies the buyer is bad at something - I usually say something along the line of ‘Do you think you could take another picture of the back of the card with your camera’s flash on?’. The usual reason their pics are bad is because they don’t have enough light, so this usually works pretty well (and hopefully they remember to use the flash for future listings!)
IMO, 99% of the time when a seller is selling a higher end card for lower prices with blurry pictures, there are visual imperfections that they are purposely hiding, especially if it’s a “low” feedback seller. I got a “NM” 1st edition base charizard in German for $10 and when I received it, it was creased. Mind you it was such a low investment that it did not matter to me, but I typically have very low expectations when the card is blurry. The only notable exception is when buying from Japanese sellers, some reason their pictures are almost always blurry, despite the cards being mint.
It’s different if the seller has 1000’s of cards and listings but if they are selling a small number of cards and they aren’t willing to take extra or clear pictures its generally best to stay clear
