I know it’s a silly question, because it comes down to my personal taste in the end. But still…
I finally got all 3 Vending Sets. Vending Series, just like most (or all?) early Japanese sets, has no set numbers, only Pokedex numbers. Now there are many ways I could organize them, but they all seem to have their downsides.
by type and rarity (like on bulbapedia)
by Pokedex numbers (but some Pokemon got two different cards while many of the 151 are missing completely)
by the order they were placed on the sheets (but then I’d consequently have to include the doubles)
Any of the above but with all sets combined instead of seperately
going really apeshit and sorting by illustrator or HP something like that
I know I could just arrange and rearrange them to try all different options, but I’d rather not handle them so much. And I want to hear how YOU organized your Vending binder. Is there a way that I missed that satisfies all needs?
I had a similar debate with myself. First I combined all 3 sets + the Masaki promos and sorted them by Pokedex number. It was kinda cool since the majority of the 150 orignal pokemons were included. Then later I changed my mind and sorted them into separate sets like on Bulbapedia (e.g. type, pokedex number). For now I prefer this configuration because it makes it easier to see that each set is in fact complete. By the way, a nice thing is that these sets are perfect for 9 page binders.
I personally ordered them like on Bulbapedia, each set separately. When I look at other Japanese sets that actually are numbered, they usually are ordered by type as well, so I (probably falsey) assumed the order on Bulbapedia is the intended order for these sets.
I don’t have a vending series binder. But one other option to consider is that since the setting of each card closely reflects locations in the original games, you can sort them in the order you would visit those towns/locations on the game. So like viridian forest near the beginning, lavender town and powerplant in the middle powerplant, victory road at the end, etc
That’s a really nice idea! Unfortunately I have never played any Pokemon Gameboy game yet, but this seems like a great opportunity to try the original three games!
I did mine Bulbapedia style and it looks nice if you ask me. As scarecrowman mentioned I like seeing that my sets are complete. Good luck and let us know what you decide!
Awh man you should really get around to playing a gen 1 game. It adds a whole new dimension to a lot of the vending cards. You can see how artists added their own interpretation of an otherwise simple and abstract game boy world
You guys are all so organized! I just have my cards in hard cases stacked into elite trainer boxes in no particular order. You are likely to find random Carddass prisms mixed in at any moment.
Lol. I could not do this. I’ve completlely reorganized my collection about 20 times over the years in binders and card savers. Super OCD and always thinking ill like one way more than another. It wastes about two whole days every time I do it…
Hey guys, thank you all for your input. I tried many variants, all of which weren’t quite satisfying to me.
What I disliked most about seperating the sets was that I had to cut inbetween some evolution lines, which honestly drives me nuts
In the end, after rearranging every card like 4-5 times, I came up with an highly unorthodox but (to me) very aesthetically pleasing layout.
I combined all sets, grouped them by their types an in these groups ordered them by Pokedex numbers (and putting in the Masakis also). The most “shocking” thing tho is that I didn’t use the usual 3x3 pattern, but instead went 3x6, meaning the horizontal lines go over both pages of the binder.
Might not be the biggest discovery ever, but feels like quite a success to me
Here’ what it looks like, if you’re interested. The last page is missing Bill’s PC and the WHF #00 sheet Pikachu, both of which I hope to acquire soon.
