Has my dream card escaped me?

I have a 1st Edition Fossil Booster Box. My intention was always to sell it and buy a PSA 10 1st Mewtwo or Alakazam, since the box and those 2 cards have always roughly been the same price (and if they weren’t, I could easily pay the difference).

But I never got around to it, and then 2020 price changes happened.

I guess the value of the booster box is around $17k USD.
The price of the Mewtwo and Alakazam? Who knows? The last ones sold for around 10k USD but I know they would be much higher though.

Do you think the price gap between the Box and either of those cards is going to increase, or will it stay fairly consistent?
I am just worried that the PSA 10 1st Alakazam or Mewtwo are going to be so much further out of my reach the longer I wait.

Do you think either of the 2 cards I mentioned earlier are well above the 17k USD price right now?

note: I can’t sell the Booster Box right now because I don’t trust AusPost

edit: If I’ve been priced out, that’s fine. I’ve still got a pretty neat box

Thannkyou for coming to my talk.

fossil may not be done running up yet.

I wanted to buy a 1st charizard and obv made some dumb mistakes along the way. But I also owned a couple of high grade 1st ed base holos spares, as well as some 1st ed booster packs - and the price movements have been very similar

Long story short - if you’re really worried, I would suggest you buy something more correlated with 1st ed base mewtwo and alakazam to hedge it out, which would be (i) well priced high grade 1st ed base holos and (Ii) sealed 1st base boosters and blisters

Accumulate them slowly whenever you can. Once prices stabilize, sell your entire collection at pwcc at one go, get bridge financing for your mewtwo (short term bank loan or wtv), then buy it and repay the bank loan with pwcc proceeds a month later

That sounds like my best course of action.

Thanks for the post, really helpful.

I’ll be on the lookout for 1st ed Base equivalents

No prob, we all gotta navigate this shithole of the situation (for ocd collectors) together

In the alternative, you can hope for a Mewtwo to show up on PWCC, and get financing from them / pay in lieu of, or collateral lending

Great service

Perfectly put

Based on the price movement of lower grades and how difficult it is to get someone to sell 10s I would say that both of the cards are certainly over $17k unfortunately. You never know though

Your dream card hasn’t escaped you yet. But your dream card in PSA 10 condition might have.

This always ends up being the route I go down when I get priced out.

It depends how badly you want 1 of these cards in PSA 10 condition.

Based on the fact that Mewtwo and Alakazam are now close to $10k in PSA 9, and given that a Base box just sold for $375k, and given that a Raichu sold for $20k… yes, I believe there’s a very likely possibility Alakazam and Mewtwo are worth meaningfully more than $17k / what a 1st edition Fossil box is worth.

But if the gap right now between your box and one of the cards is a few thousand dollars, is there nothing else in your collection that you could give up to get over the top?

Only you know your personal situation, but it seems doable.

Yeah, I can fill the gap until about a 15k price difference. Problem is, a card might not come up for sale until that gap is much much wider. I guess only time will tell if the box and cards drift thst far apart.

I missed the boat on being able to grab 10s of those guys myself, I just cherish the 7s I have of them and pretend they’re 10s lmao

i don’t think you should accept giving up getting a psa 10 as an option. find a way to get it and don’t compromise, there are afew ideas here

For sure, Id rather keep my box than settle for a PSA 9.

Awesome, the Alakazam sold for under 30k AUD, so still within reach to cover with cash.

Time to wait for a good copy to come back up for sale

It’s insane how prices have increased. Some cards are now 10x the amount they were last year. Surely there will be a small dip right?.. Right?..

PSA 9’s are the new 10’s

I hate to be that guy because I hate when people tell me this as well, but there is always a lower grade. Like many have said, 9’s are the new 10’s. 10’s are reserved now for high end collectors. 8/7 are still nice cards!

I must be in the tiny minority, but I would never recommend you to consider your dream card unachievable or to settle for a lower grade copy/lesser version, because there will always be that little bit of doubt or sadness when you look at your substitute. Personally, I’d rather die trying than buy a lower grade (not that I’d kill myself, I’d just die of old age without ever having owned the card).

So instead of giving up, try to earn more money. Invest in other Pokemon items that you are confident will double or triple in value within one year, then sell them and repeat. Or maybe you have other goods that you don’t care as much about that you can sell right now. Or maybe you have a skill or talent that you could use to earn money but never had the guts to make an actual profession out of. At worst, you will still not make enough money to buy your dream card but will have made significantly more money than if you never tried.
