I found that PSA in my (former) opinion is very harsh on (more than very light) holo scratches, I’m still inexperiened, but I got a couple of 7’s back that I thought would score an 8 or 9, and then they are being less strict on whitening on the back as I expected.
The factors I am currently considering when sending in are:
Holo scratches: Depending on severity it could bump it down to an 7 or 8 with no way to recover
Not nicely centered on front: Almost immediately disqualifies it from a 10
Silvering on the edges: Hard to say anything meaningful about this
Creases: Instantly a 6 at maximum
Back edge/corner whitening: Something is still allowed for it to get a 10, hard to explain though, and quite some serious (in collector’s eyes) wear can still give an 8
Dents: Not immediately a 6, but it’s often not going to get a lot higher either
Probably more things I am forgetting right now…
The feeling I am getting is that basically anything imperfect going on at the front is likely going to kill the grade, and the back matters a lot less, even less than I intuitively thought. But I think I agree with the front taking precedence over the back as that’s the side you are going to be looking at. (Right?)
I mean it seems a little unjustified to immediately write off the idea that PSA could’ve done it, they’ve damaged several peoples cards here in the past few months haven’t they? Not saying they definitely did it, he could’ve just missed the damage, but PSA isn’t infallible and I’d argue it’s also possible that they damaged the card…
