Had my debit card and home address stolen

If you haven’t already, start off by contacting your bank and blocking your debit card and cancelling all transactions that happened after you were compromised. Make sure your main email address is safe as well because nowadays that can be equally if not more important than your bank card details.

It could have been a result of mail fraud (theft). All it really takes is someone to steal a bill and they have enough information to get replacement credit card.

Cancel your debit card and open credit cards. Debit cards tie you to so much risk especially if you pay major bills out of that account. You don’t need to have a virus to have your card compromised. A waiter/waitress/cashier could swipe the numbers, an online vendor could be hacked and have a database stolen anything really could lead to it. A whole mess of possibilities. My best friend had his account wiped before and it took 3 months to get it back. Luckily he borrowed from parents to pay bills in the meantime. I had credit cards compromised a couple times and had no problems. Next day had a new card and new number and went from there.

When someone gets your debit card they spend YOUR money. Sometimes all of it and force bouncing of immediate payments.

When someone gets your credit card info they spend someone else’s money. You can simply not pay the account and make them investigate and follow up on the fraud.
