Hey everyone! I’ve been collecting sports cards for years and haven’t collected Pokemon since around 2000 when I was 9. Now I know a lot of sports collectors have gotten into Pokemon recently for the boost in value and to make some money, but I’m more on the nostalgia side. Pokemon for me was the most fun I’ve ever had collecting, and this past weekend was the most fun I have ever had opening pack.
I’m a sucker for the old set, but as a kid I never really opened a lot of packs. I traded for most of my good cards back in the day and was given some holos, but I’d say in 1999-2000 when it was huge for me, I maybe opened 50 packs or so, but I didn’t care. I just loved everything I had.
With this new resurgence, I went on eBay and bought some Evolutions packs since I really needed that oldschool feeling without spending thousands on the Base Set packs. I found an auction with 4 Kanto Power Boxes. I’m not sure where this guy got his boxes and if they were all bought at the same place, but it hit BIG for me.
I never pulled an original Charizard when I was a kid, but that was the dream. Just to pull one. So I brought that feeling to opening the Evolutions packs. Even know they’re not worth as much as the original Base Set, I like them just as much since it’s not about money for me. In 4 boxes, here’s what I pulled.
My girlfriend who is just getting into Pokemon herself was pretty nervous for me since I told her I bought the 4 boxes just wanting to pull ONE. That first one hit and I ran out of my room lol. I felt like an 8 year old opening cards again and I won’t ever forget it. The other 2 were just a bonus.
As for a giveaway… I’m not sure if this is allowed, but out of the 40 packs I opened, I have a ton of doubles so if anyone is looking for a particular card, please let me know and it’s yours! I also have about 45 code cards so if anyone wants those, just let me know and I’ll send you over the cards. I’d just like to hear about your favorite Pokemon memories. Those are always good stories
Hey man really kind of you to do a giveaway. I’m not in need of any cards but I would like to share a story of one of my favorite pack opening memories. I was probably around 11 years old and my Mom dragged me to Target to grab something. On the way back to the checkout stand, we passed by the trading card area. I noticed that there was a (probably third party repackaged) six pack of base set boosters that my Mom got for me.
I waited to open it till we got home because, even as a kid, I was meticulous about putting cards into sleeves before putting them in my binder. I don’t remember the exact order but somewhere in the first five packs I pulled a Holo Blastoise. My first one. I was totally content with that and didn’t expect anything to be in that last pack but I opened it up and there was a Charizard. A card I had never pulled and there it was! I was beyond excited and ran around the living room screaming lol.

Hmm well my first 2 pokemon card memories were in 1997. The video game, cards, nor anime had come out in Eng yet. But I was into anime and video games and was eagerly awaiting it. A kite store at my nearby beach had created an anime section- posters, gundamn model kits, figures from japan like dbz, and trading cards. They had Japanese packs for like $7-10 each [pricey for back then but imported nich goods so…]. My first pack was actually Team Rocket. It was out before we had base set. Pulled holo alakazam and still have, near goid as new. I went back later that summer and got some figures and 3 JP base packs. I pulled a nonholo rare trainer, holo Chansey and holo Charizard. Not sure if charizard or chansey came first but i was stoked. Still have all these cards, but when the cards came out in English - dumb past me thought “I don’t need a first edition charizard- I have the real first edition”. My idiot past self missed at least 50 opportunities to pick up 1st ed charizard, and at that time I didn’t even know about the no rarity cards!
These are the best kinds of stories. Looks like we both ran into the living room screaming, but I’m 29 lol. Do you still have the cards? Would be really cool to hold onto those with that memory.
The first holo I ever pulled was at the mall when I was 8. A Gyarados base set holo. Then my mom bought me a Charizard and I loved it so much I didn’t take it out of my pocket. It went through the wash the next day. Ouch hahaha
Awwwww man this post actually made me kind of sad lol. I don’t get why the Japanese Charizard is worth so much less than the 1st edition when it is truly the 1st edition besides the no rarity card! I’m glad you still have your pulls though. The only card I could find from my early collecting was an unlimited Charizard. Good card to hold onto, but it’s not in the best shape. Then 2 years ago I bought 5 Charizards just to have for myself. The german unlimited, japanese base set, base set two, evolutions holo and reverse holo.
Congratulations! I had a similar experience earlier this year pulling an ex for the first time in ~15 years. Opening nostalgic packs is an indescribably amazing experience, and I’m glad that you experienced it, too.
I recently turned 30 so we aren’t too far off in age. Unfortunately I don’t, I lost interest in Pokemon in middle school and I have no idea where my binder went. Probably got sent to Goodwill in one of my parent’s cleaning purges at some point.
@kyro , congrats on the pull! For Christmas one year, I really wanted pokemon cards since all the other kids had them, but my parents didn’t get me any. My grandmother gave me this weird looking book of old plays that was in Spanish. Not wanting to be rude, I thanked her and opened it up, and inside was a holographic base set blastoise, which I still have. I was totally shocked and gave her a genuine thank you this time. I was jumping up and down since blastoise was almost as good as Charizard to me. I almost traded it but now I’m glad I didn’t! As for the giveaway if you have any of the regular holos I’d love a mew zapdos and chansey if you have any of them
Wow, that was a wonderful story man. I respect people like you who really collect with their heart, congratulations on your pulls! Pokémon cards always bring me back to my happier parts of my childhood so I really cherish the cards I have in my collection, regardless of their condition (wish I took better care of most of them as a kid, but oh well.) Also, welcome to the community, happy to have you here!

Welcome to the forum and wow what incredible luck! I could maybe use a few starter mega’s but no biggie. I already have a huge collection myself. I can’t believe you pulled 3 evolutions zards. The most fun opening packs for me recently was Hidden Fates about a year ago. The set was so much fun to open. I finished the master set but still procrastinating picking up Guzma and Cynthia to complete the master set.
What collection goals do you have in mind for the future? I’m about to bump my Collection Goals thread. I love hearing what people plan to collect and their progress.

I had a fun Blastoise story recently. About a week ago, I went to Dave and Adams to try and find some cards for my Base Set I was putting together. The guy behind the counter brought out a box and told me that they were all priced before covid, so they are very low, but he doesn’t make commission so it’s all good lol. I bought 13 holos for my sets for $2 each. All in pretty good condition.
Then he tells me he has some Blastoises also. I bought 2 of them for $10 and $20 each. Both in great condition. Then he brings out a Venusaur for $20. I felt like I won the lottery lol
Much appreciated! I tell my girlfriend that they are worth good money, which is true, but I don’t really like to say I don’t plan on selling almost all of them any time soon. She is very supportive though, so she wouldn’t mind either way lol. I’m mostly a collector by heart.

I haven’t opened many other recent packs, but what are the best pulls for Hidden Fates?
I’m putting together base set, fossil, jungle and team rocket because those were my favorites as a kid. I finished base set unlimited, have the last 4 holos I need in the mail for fossil and am still slowly working on the other two. After that, I honestly have no clue. My interest is mainly in the older sets, so maybe the gym challenge set?
