Fakes are getting too good

The YouTuber Jarchomp Collectibles just sent in this card to PSA and they refused to authenticate.

It would have fooled me. Any chance it is real and PSA is being cautious due to the CGC scandal recently? It supposedly is a limited edition Chinese card.

The most straightforward answer is in that picture, that PSA (and likely other grading companies) knows what the real one looks like

The card that YouTuber bought is an obvious fake

You are correct that PSA chose not to authenticate.

What jumps out at you as being as obvious fake in the picture?

Incorrect texture → though obscured in the photo, it’s likely the anticounterfeit Pokémon marker in the bottom left will also be off
No SAR glitter effect
Rulebox isn’t clearly legible
Washed colour on Mew lacking pink, as if overexposed

I figured they got the anticounterfeit marker wrong and the youtuber conveniently has that part obscured. Nothing like outragebait drama to drive clicks

I don’t collect modern, but all of the recent fakes have been slightly blurry. This looks blurry to me. I think we are entering the era of microscopic/loupe analysis being a requirement for any significant purchase. They can scan rosettes but the fake printers can’t copy the same fidelity. It also helps that I spent a few years manually recreating fonts, font matching, and vectorizing raster images where basically every pixel matters.

The backs are always off.
It’s interesting that you only see the front here but 99% of the time you can tell it’s a fake by flipping to the back for half a second

Too reckless.
So the guy has never bought Chinese cards before and the first card he bought was a four figures raw card where the PSA is worth five figures? I would have done some research before doing that.

I don’t consume much YouTube content related to Pokemon cards but I did see this video. The man explained the situation, addressed what mistakes he made, and put it out for everyone to see. I see no issue with that

The infamous “evil coop”—Jarchomp collectibles, is a very chill guy and I am sorry that he was burned for 3k.

Also there was a lot of red flags coming from the guy selling. Claims to have been “gifted” the exclusive mew for his birthday and doesn’t know the price.

Opening gem pack 2 made me realize this was a fake as soon as I didnt see the pokemon thing on the bottom left

Yeah, bro does a whole video and says there’s a “watermark” present that we can all see is not there…what?

Always surprises me that fakers can get sophisticated wrapping techniques down but they never ever seem to think to match pokeballs spacing and size?

I’ll say this as someone who is Chinese, but yes, our people do have a history of bootlegs and forgeries.

Always err on the side of caution and make sure you purchase Chinese cards from a legitimate source. I personally would not buy from ebay sellers from China, especially the ones with a low amount of feedback, stock photos and lower prices.

Was it resealed or completely fake? For Simplified Chinese boxes, authentic boxes have anti-counterfeit labels:

It was completely fake- wrap, box, packs, and cards..

I’ve seen a lot of new collectors starting to collect SC, just wanted to bring more awareness about it.

What will AI accomplish convincingly first, to destroy us?

  • Social interactions and internet media trustworthiness
  • Skynet (Nuclear Ragnarok)
  • Convincingly authentic pokemon cards.
