Exploring insurance options for trading cards

Do Fedex cover trading cards in the event of a loss? I’m sure they treat them as “valuable collectables” with $1000 payout limit matter what additional insurance you opted for. A lot of high graded stuff would exceed that.

I had to send a card worth around £300 from the UK to an American buyer earlier this year and ran into the problem of several companies having trading cards in their small print as items they won’t pay out on in the event of a loss. I just sent it via Royal Mail in the end and risked it. Luckily it worked out okay but I would want a proper solution next time.

I don’t know, sorry. I’m still searching for suitable solution.

The few times I’ve sent anything to the US was for consignment. In this case the consignor’s insurer gave my cards coverage.

Sorry, we are really going off-topic now.

This is concerning if true, I send a submission worth around £5000 to PSA each month. I have used secursus each time as Fedex only provides insurance up to £1000. Fortunately so far nothing has gone missing.

With whats written on the secursus website about cover I would be confident I would get cover for a lost/damaged parcel regardless of its purpose, if they refused I would take it to a small claims court and be confident of winning.

Unless they state on their website specifically they dont cover grading submissions I don’t see how they could argue it.

I won’t send them an email asking for confirmation as a response like your screenshot would immediately mean any case from my end would be invalid as I’ve been told specifically. Unless they make it absolutley clear publicly in their terms of service and cover statement, I don’t see how they would have a leg to stand on, especially when UK consumer law is very much on the customers side.

We’re getting a bit off topic from the main thread here, but the reality is insurance on collectibles tends to be a pain no matter where you’re located.

If you’re using insurance that requires signature confirmation you can purchase the label directly from fedex or use something like royal mail intl tracked/signed (last mile by USPS).

I’m located in London as well and frequently receive graded card returns from PSA via fedex and haven’t had any issues so far. I’m in a development with a mail room which probably reduces the chances that fedex misses delivery.

True, the insurance challenge is not unique to the UK!

My last off-topic comment. But I think it’s important to be aware.

Even if you are shipping “from the seller to the buyer”, it appears Secursus does not cover individuals, only businesses (see last point of attached).

Sorry for deviating off-topic from the intial post!

Thank you for this. I will definitely look into it all in more detail.

Wow. Thanks for sharing. Fine print. I always thought I was covered with Secursus.

I can confirm that Secursus will not cover any postal insurance to a grading company.

I spoke with them directly after the discussion on here earlier.

Thank you all for bringing this to my attention. I shudder at the thought of one of my previous submissions going missing. I must have submitted upwards of £70,000 worth of cards with apparently zero insurance cover

That is terrifying!

Yeah, that is terrifying. But pleased you didn’t find out the hard way!

Let us know if you have any luck finding a suitable alternative insurer. I’ve struggled!

I’m going to call my own personal business insurance on monday and see if they will cover me for parcels sent to PSA. If they will not the search shall begin!

The only postive insurance stories I know of are through Collect Insure. The financials don’t make sense to me but people swear by it. Not sure if it’s available in the UK

Tagging @gottaketchumall as I know he’s done at least one informative video on insurance. Not sure if you have anything to add!

If it’s about shipping/grading with PSA. Perhaps when you have high value cards it might be an option to do “on site grading” which can only be done (for PSA) at the long beach expo.
I did it myself because I couldn’t find any way to insure some expensive cards.
